May 19-21, 2053: vs Detroit (3)

Game 1: The Rays eked out a 2-1 win in the opener at Publix Park behind a brilliant outing from Tim Johnson. The righty improved to 3-4 after going 7 2 1 1 3 8, allowing only a homer in the 6th which broke a 0-0 tie. His teammates immediately responded in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from David Morales and Dantel Chinchilla. Steve Talbott handled the 9th for save #9.

Game 2
: Tampa Bay made it four straight wins with a comfortable 7-4 win over Detroit, comfortable as Detroit scored 3 in the 9th to make the final respectable. Rookie sensation Randy Mastropietro ran his record to 7-0 with a 5 4 1 1 3 3 outing and he had plenty of support, led by Tony Vasquez whose 1st-inning 2-run homer (#6/13) got the ball rolling. Luis Barela added a 2-run shot (#6) and Ezequiel Avalos plated a pair as well.

Game 3: The Rays completed the sweep on a night when runs were once again scarce, walking it off against Detroit 3-2 in 13 innings on a Luis Barela blast (#7) deep into the Tampa night. Ben Hilton was solid at 6 6 2 2 2 4 and Sung-min Yang had a solo homer (a team-high #9) in regulation. The bullpen was stellar with 7 shutout innings and Mario Berumen (2-1) got the win.

Team record: 26-18. The Yankees lost once so we've cut their division lead to 3 games and gone 2 up in the second wild card. Next up: A day off then Baltimore visits for 3.
