Anatomy Volume 1, 1985: Game 148 of 162

September 21, 1985: Detroit Tigers (79-68) @ Boston Red Sox (76-71)

We remain six adrift despite yesterday’s win, with the Yankees now leading the O’s by a half-game with 15 to play. At least if we can’t catch ‘em, we might have a say in who gets it done. Jeff Sellers up for us tonight taking on Walt Terrell, who at 16-7 / 3.48 is putting together a nice season indeed for the Tigers. A nice little Saturday afternoon crowd of about 30 thousand in attendance at the Fen.

Game Recap

Doubles to Sweet Lou Whitaker and Kirk Gibson get them a 1st-inning run and a Johnny Grubb solo shot adds another in the 2nd.

Sellers looks no match for their big top-order bats as he gives up two more in the 3rd, but I manage to get one of them back in the home half with a single to make it 4-1.

Give Jeff credit, he hangs tough and holds them until we get a couple more to make a game of it in the 5th as I add a couple more ribbies to the season’s tally.

They edge away again with a run in the next and that’s Sellers done for the day with Lollar relieving him and getting us out of a big bases-loaded jam with a timely GIDP.

Loose defence costs us another run in the 7th and it ends up being a costly one as we get it back to 6-5 on a 2-run double by Hoffman in the 8th but go down quietly in the 9th to lose a close one.

Best Performances, News & Highlights of the Day

  • Some ferocious contests today as you'd expect with all four races tight; the Twins' 8-7 win in 16 over the Royals - despite 5 hits from Frank White - is undoubtedly the pick of them.

  • MLB Debuts: Colin Ward
  • Daily Notes: IRL, Wade Boggs ties Tris Speaker's club mark of 222 hits with a single in the 2nd inning of their game against Detroit. Another in the 5th, his 185th, breaks the mark set by Willie Wilson in 1980 to set a new AL record. His final total for the season of 187 will stand as the record until 2001.
