July 16-17, 2035: vs Boston (2)
A sweep of the 2-game series with Boston combined with Toronto dropping a game means the Rays are now 4 1/2 up in the AL East and (hopefully) not looking back.
An 8-run 4th inning which saw the Rays homer 4 times enabled them to coast to a 9-4 win over the boys from Beantown at Tropicana Field. The red-hot Danny Charlton got the party started with a 2nd-inning solo shot (#23) then it was bombs away two innings later with Joe Stack (#17), Justin Blackwell (#16), Luis Berumen (#18) and Wander Franco (#10) all finding the seats with Berumen's a 3-run blast. Joe Scheu (9-4) said thanks for the runs and was rolling until he put 3 men on to start the 7th and they all scored, giving him a final 6 7 4 4 2 3 line. Nick Wallerstedt got a 3-inning save, his 2nd.
Runs were much tougher to come by in the second game but the Rays got both of them in a 2-0 win behind a combined 4-hit shutout from Danny Morales and three relievers, the team's sixth straight win. Morales improved to 11-1 and 29-6 over the last season and a half after going 5 2 0 0 3 5 and new closer Devon Williams fanned a pair in the 9th for his 7th save. Danny Charlton's RBI double in the 1st stood up until Danny Arroyave added a solo insurance homer (#17) in the 8th.
Team record: 61-32. Next up: 2 more games at home, against those Blue Jays who will likely need to win both to get back into a division race slipping away from them.
