Canucks move Stanton to Jets
Dec 1st, 2015
Vancouver traded defenseman
Ryan Stanton to
Winnipeg this morning. After playing a prominent role with the
Canucks last season,
Stanton was pushed down the depth chart by free agent signings
Kris Russell and
Nick Holden. He had only gotten into four games through the first two months of the season and was reportedly looking for a change of scenery.
The Trade -
WPG acquires LD Ryan Stanton; VAN acquires LD Will Butcher.
Stanton should see more icetime in
Winnipeg, as he could conceivably leap past the likes of
Ben Chiarot, Grant Clitsome and
Toby Enstrom to be the second best left defenseman on the depth chart.
Linden said,
"We had been trying to move Ryan because he was wanting more playing time than we could give him with our current depth. He's a good player who deserves an opportunity and we wanted to find a good fit for him. We appreciate his time with the Vancouver organization."
Will Butcher is a twenty year old minor league defenseman with NHL potential. He's a good skater who moves the puck well and shows good defensive intelligence and positioning. He will join what has become a solid D-corps in Utica and have to earn his icetime there, but
Canucks management have hopes he can play for them in the NHL in a couple years as a depth option.
