Cards news: July 9 -- Hence's career ends with elbow ligament injury
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Tink Hence has announced his retirement after learning he suffered a career-ending elbow ligament injury in a 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves on July 6.
The 25-year-old right-hander will undergo Tommy John surgery. But the team says he will never pitch again.
In 19 starts this season, Hence had gone 7-6 with a 3.28 ERA.
He broke into the majors during the 2024 season, going 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA in one start.
Since that time, he has gone 55-26 with a 3.08 ERA.
He won 15 games in 2025 and 2027 and went 18-7 with a 2.34 ERA in 2026, when he won the National League Cy Young award.
