Cards news: July 19 -- 2B Arranez dealt to Mets in exchange for SP Matt Allan
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Matt Allan from the New York Mets in exchange for second baseman Luis Arraez and minor league pitcher Ramiro Grandos.
Looking to fill the void left after ace Tink Hence saw his career end with a second elbow ligament injury, the Cardinals acquired Allan hoping to add a top of the rotation starter.
The 27-year-old has made 19 starts this season going 5-10 with a 4.79 ERA.
For his career, he has pitched in 195 games/114 starts since breaking in in 2023 with the Mets.
He owns a career record of 38-37 with 17 saves and a 3.54 ERA.
St. Louis added Arraez, 31, in the offseason hoping the former four-time .300-plus hitter would provide some spark at the top of their batting order.
Instead, they got a .249 hitter with no power and just average defense at second base.
Signed out of the Domincan Republic in November of 2027, Grandados has a high upside but at 17-year-old is a long way from even thinking about making the majors.
The Cardinals also are expected to recall shortstop Wilman Diaz from AAA Memphis.
Diaz, 24, started the season in the majors as the Cardinals starting shortstop.
He played in 31 games and hit just .188 with three homers in 11 RBIs.
During his time at AAA, he got into 47 games and hit .239 with nine homers and 22 RBIs.
