Yeah, and no idea why he was a free agent. I think sometimes there is a "seam" in the game where a guy's contract had expired, and he had not yet signed a new one. But under Reserve Clause rules, he would still be bound to the Cardinals. IRL he missed the 1954 and 1955 seasons, and then picked up where he left off in 1956 with St. Louis. Could have been a military commitment; although they were rare after the end of the Korean War. Whatever, glad to have him.
