August 16-19, 2035: at Toronto (4)

The Rays had a lousy time in Canada, dropping 3 of 4 to the Jays although they still hold a healthy 12-game lead on Toronto and the Yankees.

Tampa Bay opened up an early 5-3 lead before Toronto scored 4 times in the 5th to go on to an 8-5 win. Wander Franco (#13) and Joe Stack (#22) had solo shots before Bobby Marin's 2-run blast (#17) gave them that lead. But Chris Ferguson (6-10) reverted to his poor form of late and was hit hard in the 5th, finishing 4 8 6 6 2 4 and seeing his ERA rise to 4.57.

The Rays did bounce back to take the second game, edging the Jays 3-2. Danny Arroyave was 3-4 and his RBI single in the 3rd turned out to be the difference. Joe Scheu couldn't make it through the 5th, going 4.1 6 2 2 2 5 but the bullpen was brilliant from there with Chris Ericson (2-2) going 2 scoreless for the win and Devon Williams converting save #14.

Tampa Bay couldn't hold another early lead, and although they fought back to tie the game in the 8th the bullpen let them down today as they fell 6-5 to Toronto. Danny Arroyave's 3-run homer in the first gave them a quick start but Danny Morales was poor, giving the lead back and letting Toronto go ahead thanks to a 4.1 4 4 4 4 4 outing. Arroyave unloaded his 2nd homer of the game and 23rd of the season with the bases empty to tie it in the 8th but Matt Cronin (0-1) put two men on in the bottom of the frame and Mike Moore gave up the winning hit.

The finale was the ugliest game of the series for the Rays as they were beaten soundly 6-1 by the Jays. Kevin DiCostanzo (16-4) turned in his third lousy start in his last four outings, going 4.1 7 5 5 5 4 and the bats only squeaked out four hits.

Team record: 80-44. Next up: We'll try to get right at home against Boston as the Red Sox visit for 3 games.
