MLB news: Oct. 1 -- Cubs make postseason for first time since 2020
The Chicago Cubs are back in the postseason for the first time since 2020, as they clinched the third and final National League wild-card berth following the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cubs dropped their game to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 that day, but the Cardinals loss kept them two games in front of them with one game to go.
Chicago (87-74) sits in third place in the NL Central, some 17 games in back of the Cincinnati Reds.
Division rival Milwaukee owns the No. 2 seed in the NL wild-card race, five games in front of the Cubs.
The Brewers could still catch the Arizona Diamondbacks for the top seed, should they win their regular-season finale and the D'backs drop theirs.
Chicago last made the World Series in 2016, when they defeated the Cleveland Indians in seven games.
