July 2304 - BNN Weekly Report

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

11 July 2304

Analysis

We are now 60% through the season, and now we see a trend: SSDD. In the past five seasons of the CBO's official six-year history, there have been four different champions: Diamond City (twice), Nordhagen Beach, University Point, and Roxbury.

In 2304, the last three champions hold the CBO's top three records, with Roxbury (55-17), Nordhagen Beach (52-20), and University Point (47-25) all at the top. The Deathclaws actually are tied for third-best with County Crossing. Diamond City (42-30) has the fourth-best record in the South Charles Association, but they seem to hold a major edge over FHE (37-35) and Vault 81 (35-37) for 2nd place in the Railroad League.

In an earlier report, we thought that just four teams were contending for the title. With the recent struggles by Jamaica Plain (46-26) and the resurgence of the Deathclaws, that list has climbed to at least five teams. Speaking of fives, let's look at what the Top 5 in the Power Rankings did over the past two weeks.

Roxbury remains #1, going a tied for CBO-best 8-2 in their last 10. The Rad Sox split at Quincy (#19), swept Oberland (#21), split again with the Gunners, and swept the T-51s again. With an 8-game lead in the SCA, the Sox are looking to cruise into the playoffs in their final 48 games.

The Party Boys are the #2 team with the North Charles Association's best record and a currently comfortable five-game lead in the Brotherhood League. The Boys went 7-3 in their last 10, splitting with a hot Fort Hagen (#8) that went 8-2 in their last 10, swept Easy Town (#9), got swept by the Silver Shroud, and swept The Slog (#23) by outscoring them 23-1.

At #3, we have University Point, which went 7-3 in their last 10 to take over first place in the Minutemen League. They swept FHE (#11), swept the Gunners, split at Oberland, and then won one of three at Atom (#10).

County Crossing is the #4 team, going 5-5 in their last 10. The Bloodbugs were swept at Starlight (#15), swept Salem (#20), split at Institute League leaders Sunshine Tidings (#6), and then won one of three at the Witch Hats.

Finally, struggling Jamaica Plain is #5, going 4-6 in their last 10. The Red Rockets split at Vault 81 (#13), won one of three at Spectacle Island (#22), split with Diamond City (#7), and then won one of three at home against the Reapers.

Trade Impacts: With the NWL and Vim! Leagues reaching their trade deadlines, the CBO was active in moving some fringe players around with a few CBO players going to one of the other leagues. A few other CBO teams made deals to move some bigger-name players. Let's look at some of the bigger names on the move as we move deeper into "Trade Month" with the most recent first.

SP X10-44 Mannson + RP Mike Pond - from Diamond City to Fort Hagen. The Swatters appear to be offloading some grizzled veterans as the 37-year-old (assumed by aging technology) Mannson moved to another contender. In return, Diamond City received a quartet of minor leaguers, with two decent potential pitchers in Alien Mars and Edwin Flowesome. Mars was actually part of the next two names on the list.

SP Mike Cartrette + SP Brent Hooker - from Fort Hagen to Atom. Tired of constantly being on the injured list, the Silver Shroud off-loaded Cartrette and Hooker in anticipation of making more moves at pitcher. The Cats take on the highly-talented Cartrette (who they will shut down until 2305) and a good Hooker to add to their good pitching staff. In return, the Shroud received four CBO-rated future prospects in CF Justin Barrowspirit and SP Birdman Galvan. RP George Agee was already promoted to the Shroud.

LF Jarrett Metalbox - from Easy Town to Victory (NWL). This was an interesting decision by the Assaultrons since Metalbox has been one of the best players in their franchise's history, including a career .357 batting average. However, he has struggled and was no longer an everyday player, meaning that the Trons were trying to get some talent to take his place. Apparently they see some potential that in LF Sum Downie that OSA scouts do not see. This one was a headscratcher.

C Tyler Shoemaker - from FHE to Easy Town. Unlike the above trade, this one did benefit the Assaultrons, picking up one of the league's better catchers in Shoemaker. In return, Easy Town gave up RP Jason Hadley and a really good prospect in 18-year-old Crusher Rankins, though he has struggled in his first two seasons in the GBRL.

SP John Oldsink - from Goodneighbor to Jamaica Plain. A five-time 10+ game winner, Oldsink has struggled in 2304 and will be considered a failsafe with the Red Rockets. In return, the Hancocks get a good potential catcher in Cuba Badding.

3B Ryan Morris - from University Point to Dalton (VL). Morris has been the Deathclaws starting 3B for all nine seasons of the franchise's existence. This season he was fifth on the team in home runs, but the Claws were ready to move on. To replace him, they also acquired the services on a good contact 3B in Bobb County from Spectacle Island. The Fog Crawlers of the Vim! League sent a 32-year-old relief pitcher in Chris Whorley, who probably will not play in the CBO. This was an offload trade that will benefit Dalton Farm but not the Deathclaws.

RP Little Rat Swickard - from Salem to Grand Hotel (VL). Swickard has been a reliever for the Witch Hats for all nine seasons of their existence, holding a 3.88 career ERA in 238 appearances. The Atoms of the Vim! League signed him to be their closer, in which he will probably dominate there. In return, the Hats got two interesting prospects who could earn their way to the CBO according to the OSA: RF Greeta Jendowanian and 3B Honey Harggus. Harggus was a former 2nd-round pick by Vault 81 who has a great glove for pretty much any defensive position on the field but catcher.

SP Tony Bertha - from Goodneighbor to University Point. This trade happened a month ago, but it was a big move for the 27-year-old brother of Small Bertha, owner of the Vim! League. Bertha has paid off so far, going 3-0 with a 2.70 for the Deathclaws so far. The Hancocks got three fringe players in SP, Bill Sarnacki, SP Brad Smailes, and SS Aaron Nukacola and a prospect in 2B Imperial LeBeau in return.

Trade Rumors: With just over two weeks before we hit the trade deadline, there are also a few rumors of players who may be on the move in July. Here is a list of a single player per teams looking to sell:

Abernathy 2B C.T. Woodward (.251/6/33)
Easy Town SP Good Company Schiller (3-7, 4.37)
Egret 1B Joe Mahaney (.282/12/32)
FHE SP Tristan Marble (7-7, 5.35)
Finch Farm 1B Will Ashfire (.263/19/44)
Goodneighbor SP Chet Arthur (5-7, 4.13)
Lexington SP Aaron Somer (6-4, 3.73)
Oberland SS Lernz Tentsleep (.274/16/45)
Quincy RF Baywatch Fischler (.294/3/14)
Salem RP Dan Beantown (4-3, 1 SV, 3.86)
Spectacle Island RF Matt Basile (,280/11/32)
Vault 81 SP Justin Sumbich (7-8, 4.70)
