Month's Outstanding Players
CBO
NCA Hitter - Ben Pawlak battered North Charles Association pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.
"I've been around Commonwealth Baseball Organization long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Pawlak told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."
In 21 games, Pawlak hit .487 with 7 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 21 runs.
Pawlak is batting .382 this season in 85 games with 17 home runs, 68 RBIs and 68 runs scored. He has 124 hits in 325 at-bats.
SCA Hitter - The top hitter in the South Charles Association in July was Roxbury left fielder Young Goodman.
He was selected as the Batter of the Month after batting .405, hitting 8 home runs, scoring 13 runs and driving in 24.
This season Goodman has delivered 111 hits in 326 at-bats for a .340 average with 24 home runs. He is getting on base at a .432 clip and his totals also include 68 RBIs and 61 runs scored. This year Goodman has played in 85 games.
NCA Pitcher - When Whip Lashley takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the County Crossing Bloodbugs. At least that's the way it was in July.
He excelled with a 6-0 mark and 1.64 ERA in 6 starts. In 44 innings, he fanned 24 and walked 5.
That's why he was honored once again as the Pitcher of the Month by the North Charles Association.
This season Lashley has a 14-4 mark in 22 starts with a 2.30 ERA. He has given up 128 hits in 156.1 innings, struck out 100 and issued 26 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .220 batting average against him.
SCA Pitcher - Digger Vadim of Jamaica Plain had a tremendous July with a 3-0 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the South Charles Association.
Vadim restricted opposing hitters to 45 base hits and a .265 batting average. He rang up 45 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks, and crafted a 1.81 ERA.
In 22 starts this season Vadim has recorded a 13-2 record and a 2.16 ERA.
NCA Rookie - Youngster Was Renti emerged as the latest North Charles Association Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Salem deserved the honor, batting .276 with 2 home runs and 8 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Renti enjoy the limelight.
This year Renti is batting .217 with 66 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 33 times and has batted in 22 runs.
SCA Rookie - Diamond Ball is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest South Charles Association Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.
In July the Spectacle Island hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .301 average with 25 hits, 5 home runs and 13 RBIs.
Thus far this year Ball is hitting .315 with 29 home runs, 58 RBIs and 60 runs scored.
BMU
CA Hitter - C3-88 Puppetboy put together a good July to earn the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Breakheart Banks officials that he belongs on the big league roster.
The Behemoths left fielder posted a .383 batting average with 9 home runs, 18 RBIs and 17 runs scored.
This season Puppetboy is batting .297 with 41 RBIs, 38 runs scored and 18 home runs.
MA Hitter - Charles View Cannibals fans believe they've got a talented young star in Kenry Batray.
He did nothing to dissuade that notion in July, as he hit .403 with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
The end result was the right fielder being named the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month.
On the year Batray has hit .342 with 20 home runs, 51 RBIs and scored 50 runs.
CA Pitcher - Kyle Schenk was on cloud nine the entire month of July, capping it off with the Commonwealth Association Pitcher of the Month honors.
The Greentop Nursery starter was spectacular in 5 starting assignments with 3 wins and no losses, 34.1 innings pitched, 17 strikeouts and a fine 2.10 ERA.
This season Schenk has crafted a 9-3 mark with a 3.40 ERA in 103.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .266 against him and he has 62 strikeouts.
MA Pitcher - The Somerville Place Sentry Bots owe John Oldsink a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in July, Oldsink tore up the opposition with a fine 3-1 mark on his way to the Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month award.
"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Oldsink, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."
It was Oldsink who did the banging in July as he tossed up 20 strikeouts in 32 innings, holding opponents to a .173 average and posting a 1.41 ERA.
GBRL
NL Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Greater Boston Rookie League, Knife Bowie put up some good numbers in July and earned the NL Batter of the Month award.
He was one of Arlington's offensive leaders with a .444 average in 18 games. He also racked up 9 home runs, 23 RBIs, and 25 runs scored.
For the year Bowie is batting .332 with 30 home runs, 70 RBIs and 63 runs scored.
SL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 20 Justin Sauerkraut has a lot of baseball ahead of him.
But for now the young Mass Pike Radroaches star can enjoy the numbers he put up in July, which have garnered him the nod as the South League Batter of the Month.
His breakout month featured a .344 average with 13 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
This year Sauerkraut has hit at a .317 pace and produced 60 RBIs, 33 home runs and scored 51 runs.
NL Pitcher - The North League made it official today -- Darryl Archideld of the Sanctuary Hills Zetans is the Pitcher of the Month. In July he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.
Archideld made 5 starts, registered 5 wins and no losses with a solid 2.95 ERA. In 36.2 innings he allowed 38 hits, racked up 38 strikeouts, walked 10 and permitted teams to hit .279 against him.
