September 8-10, 2053: vs Baltimore (3)
Game 1: Vinny Miranda was excellent and the Rays got just enough offense to take a 4-1 win over Baltimore in the opener. Miranda's been our resident hard-luck hurler but was in fine form at 6 5 1 1 0 5 today improve to 6-12, 3.23 since coming over from Oakland. Steve Talbott finished up for his 35th save and the scoring came courtesy of Jesus Avalos' 2-run homer (#29) and a solo shot (#36) and RBI single from Luis Barela.
Game 2: More quality pitching was on display today for Tampa Bay as they downed the Orioles 6-2. Randy Mastropietro improved to 17-5 after going 5 6 2 2 1 3 and has a shot at 20 wins with 4 starts left. Alec McInerney went the final 4 innings, allowing only 2 hits and fanning 6 for his 1st save of the year. David Morales was a double short of the cycle today, driving in a pair including HR #6, and Ezequiel Avalos chipped in a 2-run shot (#28), putting him one behind Jesus in the Avalos HR competition.
Game 3: With the Yankees fading farther and farther back in the rearview mirror, the Rays emptied the bench against Baltimore in the finale and somewhat predictably fell 6-0 with the offense only managing 3 hits (all of which came from the subs, though). The loss really wasn't the fault of Ben Hilton (8-5) who went a fine 6 2 1 1 1 8 and didn't allow a hit until an Oriole solo homer in the 6th. Mario Berumen came on for the 7th and was pummeled for five runs to let it get away.
Team record: 90-51. As mentioned the Yankees are in free fall and were swept, knocking them 9 back and reducing the magic number to 13. Next up: A day off then we're off to Oklahoma City for 3 against the Sunbirds.
