Grooms Need Extras to Top Browns, Lead 1-0 in Series
One game in and the World Championship Series is already looking exhausting.
The Brooklyn Grooms and the St. Louis Browns needed 11 innings to settle Game 1, with the Grooms finally taking the 3-1 victory at Sportsmans Park. Excelling in the win was Brooklyn closer Tom Lovett, who threw 10.1 innings allowing 1 runs. The Grooms and Browns are playing a best-of-7 series.
Brooklyn used a timely hit from Con Daily to get the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run double in the top of the 11th inning to put the Grooms ahead, 3-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.
"We'll take some time to unwind," said Daily, "and then get after it again."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsmans Park in St. Louis.

Browns Clip Grooms 5-4 in WCS Contest
The St. Louis Browns nearly wasted a strong game from starter Willie McGill, but were saved by some timely hitting in a walk-off win over the Brooklyn Grooms today.
McGill threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The win allowed St. Louis to force a 1-1 tie in the best-of-7 World Championship Series.
The most significant at-bat for St. Louis came with runners on 1st and 3rd in the bottom of the tenth. Browns first baseman Paul Cook hit a run-scoring single to win the game.
"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," McGill said in his postgame press conference.
Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at Eastern Park in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WCS
The Brooklyn Grooms got a strong performance from pitcher Adonis Terry, who stymied the visiting St. Louis Browns en route to a win, 5-3, in Game 3 of the World Championship Series today. The Browns could never get a bead on the right-handed Terry, who threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The Grooms now hold a 2-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Had Monte Ward not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Ward hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Grooms.
"I had pretty good command out there," said Terry.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Eastern Park in Brooklyn.

St. Louis Win to Pull Even With Brooklyn
The St. Louis Browns topped the Brooklyn Grooms by the score of 5-3 and moved into a 2-2 tie in the World Championship Series today. The largest share of the credit belongs to St. Louis starter Jack Stivetts, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball in the win.
Tommy McCarthy, the 28-year old right fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. McCarthy contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the sixth inning to put St. Louis up, 3-1.
"I felt good even in the late innings," said Stivetts after the game.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Eastern Park in Brooklyn.

Host Grooms Drop Pivotal Game 5, Now Trail Series 3-2
With starter Willie McGill leading the charge, the St. Louis Browns defeated the Brooklyn Grooms, 5-4, in Game 5 of the World Championship Series today. The left-hander threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball at Eastern Park to help St. Louis take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Had Jack Boyle not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Boyle hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Browns.
"We don't have much margin for error now," Grooms manager Monte Ward said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately."
The next game is set to be played for Friday, October 16th , 1891 at Sportsmans Park in St. Louis.

The Brooklyn Grooms and the St. Louis Browns will take the World Championship Series to a decisive 7th game. Brooklyn Tops St. Louis
The Brooklyn Grooms pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Championship Series in a hard-fought series with the St. Louis Browns.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 6-0 victory at Sportsmans Park, Brooklyn lay claim to the franchise's 1st championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Mike Griffin. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 80-57 and claimed first place in the National League.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Brooklyn in the days to come.
