The series opened at the historic Wrigley Field, with the 2017 Oakland Athletics making a strong statement in Game 1 by defeating the 1939 Chicago Cubs 8-4. Paul Blackburn secured the win for the Athletics, while Matt Joyce played a pivotal role as Player of the Game, going 4-4 with a crucial RBI. The series then shifted to the Oakland Coliseum, where the 1939 Chicago Cubs showed resilience. In Game 3, they emerged victorious with a 5-3 win, with Charlie Bryan earning the win. This game marked the first home loss for the 2017 Athletics in the series. Hank Leiber and Gabby Hartnett both hit home runs for the Cubs, while in Game 4, Bill Lee's outstanding complete game performance helped the Cubs even the series at 2-2. Joe Marty's two-run triple in the 8th inning played a crucial role in the Cubs' 4-2 win, putting the 1939 Cubs back on the map.
