MLB news: Sept. 23 -- Cincinnati and New York Mets are first teams to earn playoff berths
The Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets are the first teams to earn spots in the 2029 postseason following the outcomes of their games on Sept. 23.
Both teams are assured of at least wild-card berths and own sizeable leads in their respective divisions.
The Mets, who will be back in the playoffs for the first time since 2024, are in following a 9-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
At 89-59, New York owns a 7.5-game advantage over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East Division with 14 games remaining in the regular season.
The Mets also own a half-game lead over the Reds for the best overall record in MLB.
Despite a 5-3 loss to the New York Yankees, the Reds sewed up their fourth straight trip to the playoffs.
Going for their fourth straight NL Central Division crown, Cincinnati (89-75) owns an eight-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals with 13 games to go.
The Reds haven't won it all since 1990. New York won its last World Series in 1986.
