MLB news: Oct. 4 -- Mets capture NL East title
Despite an 11-1 loss to the Miami Marlins, the New York Mets will enter the 2029 playoffs as champions of the National League East Division.
The Mets (91-67) own a 4.5-game lead in the division over the Philadelphia Phillies with four games left in the regular season.
New York appears headed toward a spot in the wild-card round as it trails the NL-Central leading Cincinnati Reds by three games and the NL West champion San Francisco Giants by two in the race for a the first-round byes in the NL playoffs.
The Mets last playoff appearance came in 2024, when they were also NL East champs.
They last made the World Series in 2015, losing to the Kansas City Royals.
New York's last World Series title came in 1986, when it defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
