MLB news: Oct. 8 -- Final AL wild card goes to Yankees
With a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox in the final game of the season, the New York Yankees earned themselves a spot in the American League playoffs.
The Yankees (86-76) finished the season in third place in the American League East Division, some seven games behind the Baltimore Orioles.
But that was good enough to land them in third place in the wild-card race, a game in front of both the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.
New York will face the AL Central champion Kansas City Royals in the best-of-three wild-card round.
The postseason berth is the Yankees' first since 2026.
They have not reached the World Series since 2009, when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.
