May 13-15, 2036: at Chicago White Sox (3)

The Rays swept the woeful White Sox in Chicago, including winning "the game from hell" which saw them lose 3 pitchers including the starter in the first inning, and have to go 15 to win.

The opener was the most straightforward of the three games as the Rays scored 7 times by the 4th and took an 8-4 win over Chicago. Joe Stack hit a pair of solo homers to give him 7 and added an RBI single while Danny Charlton hit a 3-run homer (#8) to lead the offense. Nick Wallerstedt (1-0) got the first of what could be many starts and wasn't terribly impressive, getting the win despite going 5 7 4 4 0 4 with a couple of homers allowed.

The second game was one of more grueling affairs I've managed in any save. It began with Leo Gutierrez having to leave after striking out the leadoff man in the 1st with what turned out to be shoulder inflammation which will sideline him 4 months. This meant a parade of pitchers who largely kept the team in the game when they scored 4 in the 6th on two-run homers from Danny Charlton (#9) and Mal Stephens (#3). The game was 4-4 in the 9th when Branden Gammage, the 8th Rays pitcher of the 9th, left with a sore elbow which will keep him out for 3 weeks. He was replaced by Jadon Smith, who faced two men before leaving with a strained back (only a 3-day injury. This left Eric Lewis as the last unused reliever and he went 3 innings but he wasn't going to be pushed to the 14th which meant we had to turn to Joe Marlette (4-1) to make his first relief appearance since 2029 with Memphis. Thankfully in the 15th Danny Arroyave delivered an RBI single and Marlette finished it out to preserve a game that would have been devastating to lose.

Transactions: Gutierrez (60-day) and Gammage (15-day) went on the IL and we called up a couple of farmhands to make their MLB debuts. Jordan Rodriguez, our 2nd-round pick in 2029, is up from Durham after pitching well with a 2.19 ERA in 37 IP in their rotation. He has iffy (40) control, average stuff (50) but good movement (65). Also coming up is David Marin (no relation to Bobby), a 2027 scouting discovery who is 50/55/45-rated and he'll join the rotation, which was already down a starter before Gutierrez went down.

A 9-run 5th inning put the Rays up 11-0 in the finale, but Danny Morales couldn't get the final out in the 5th as Chicago scored 6 times and Tampa Bay had to hold on for an 11-7 win. The red-hot Mal Stephens hit a 2-run homer (#4) in the 2nd and then added a 2-run double in that 9-run 5th, Alex Rivas added a 2-run homer (#2) and Duk-yoon Ko smacked a 2-run double for the big hits. Morales cruised through the first 4 but apparently the long wait to come out for the 5th messed up his rhythm as he finished 4.2 8 6 6 2 2 and missed out on an easy win. Instead the win went to Jordan Rodriguez in his MLB debut as he went 3 1/3 and allowed only one run, helping save the beleaguered bullpen.

Team record: 22-14. Toronto lost a couple of games and we cut their lead down to 1 1/2. Next up: Back home for 3 against 19-16 Cleveland.

MLB News: Minnesota's Royce Lewis notched career hit #2000.
