NHL Offseason News

The Florida Panthers win the Draft Lottery and move up from second to first in the first round draft order.

TRADE: Chicago acquires C Sean Couturier (23yo, 82gp, 17-26-43, +2), C Antoine Vermette (33yo, 74gp, 6-9-15, +7), PHI 7th 2016; Philadelphia acquires G Corey Crawford (31yo, 65gp, 31w, 5so, 2.75gaa, .902sv%) @ 5% retained, CHI 3rd 2016
The Blackhawks make a big splash, moving out star netminder Corey Crawford while getting younger with rising star and two way force Sean Couturier. The Flyers move out a key prospect but gain an elite goalie with championship experience. The fact that they also acquire a top 100 draft pick helps to offset the pain of losing Couturier. Philadelphia wins this trade.

TRADE: San Jose acquires RW Jordan Martinook (23yo, AHL 78gp, 19-39-58, +3); Arizona acquires C Steve Ott (33yo, 20gp, 0-2-2, -8), D Jeremy Roy (19yo, AHL 81gp, 3-24-27, +3, 126pim)

TRADE: Calgary acquires LW Kyle Connor (19yo, AHL 81gp, 20-29-49, +3); Florida acquires C Mikael Backlund (27yo, 50gp, 7-13-20, -3)
The Flames move out a career Flame in Backlund, a constant two way contributor in their lineup ever since making the team full time as a 21 year old. He had an off year, battled injuries, was a minus player and had the lowest points per game he's had since his 22 year old season. He's only a year removed from posting career highs of 19 goals, 35 assists and a plus sixteen rating, and clearly still regarded highly around the league as his return is top prospect and last year's fourth overall pick Kyle Connor. Connor is highly touted offensively but there are question marks around his play in his own end. The Flames win this deal.

TRADE: Pittsburgh acquires C Adam Brooks (20yo, AHL 82gp, 24-29-53, +2); Calgary acquires G Eric Hartzell (27yo, AHL 45gp, 1.84gaa, .939sv%)
Bizarre move for Calgary who looked like they were trying to get younger in the Backlund-Connor trade. They give up on Brooks pretty early (many scouts believe he has at least middle six NHL upside) in exchange for a 27 year old dime-a-dozen minor league goalie. Pittsburgh wins this deal.

TRADE: Carolina acquires G James Reimer (28yo, 17gp, 3.04gaa, .921sv%, 6w); TOR acquires LW Brad Malone (27yo, 74gp, 7-13-20, -17)
Toronto had to move a goalie and the Hurricanes took advantage. Brad Malone is a defense-first fourth liner who plays a physical and responsible game. His minus seventeen is more the result of playing for Carolina last year than an indication of his defensive abilities. Reimer has looked decent in his opportunities in Toronto but wasn't going to get playing time. In Carolina he will have a chance to at least be a 1B and earn more starts. This is a win for Carolina.

TRADE: Boston acquires D Joel Edmundson (23yo, AHL 82gp, 4-42-46, +1); St. Louis acquires C Chris Mueller (30yo, AHL 82gp, 24-30-54, +4)

TRADE: NY Rangers acquire LW Max Friberg (23yo, AHL 73gp, 23-24-47, +11); Anaheim acquires RW Rene Bourque (34yo, 20gp, 0-3-3, -2)

TRADE: Columbus acquires LW Eric Tangradi (27yo, 14/15 33gp, 7-2-9, E); Nashville acquires C Matt Stajan (32yo, 21gp, 0-2-2, -1)
