May 26-27, 2034: vs NY Yankees (2)
The Rays swept the 2-game mini-series from New York and moved back into 2nd place in the AL East, but still trail the Jays by 3 1/2 games.
The opener was a struggle as the Rays rallied with two runs in the bottom of the 10th to take a 4-3 win over the Yankees on a walk-off walk. Danny Morales pitched well (7 3 2 2 2 1) but the bats struggled to get anything going outside of a Danny Charlton solo homer (#12) in the 4th. But a 2-base Yankee error in the 8th allowed Joe Stack to bring home the tying run with an RBI single and we went to extras. A Jadon Smith (4-1) error in the 10th led to him giving up to go-ahead run before consecutive bases-loaded walks to Duk-yoon Ko and Justin Blackwell forced home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the frame.
Tampa Bay had a much easier time of it in the second game as Danny Arroyave homered twice to lead the Rays to a 10-1 shellacking of New York. Arroyave's solo homer in the 2nd put them up 1-0 and after the Yankees tied it in the 4th the Rays responded with 4 in the bottom of the inning to pull away with a couple of Yankee errors and a Danny Charlton RBI double proving large. Arroyave added a 2-run homer later (#9) and Mal Stephens capped a 3-4, 2-RBI day with a solo shot (#6). Joe Scheu (3-4) coasted with the support, finishing 6.2 7 1 1 2 8.
Team record: 27-20, back in the second wild card slot. Next up: Another quickie 2-gamer at Fenway Park against the Sawx.
