May 30-June 1, 2036: vs Texas (3)

The Rays took 2 of 3 from the Rangers and moved within 2 1/2 of Toronto while holding firm to the second wild card.

Joe Marlette was in dominant form as the Rays took the opener 5-1. The ace lefty improved to 5-2, going 7 5 1 1 1 12 and was backed by a couple of big hits. Justin Blackwell's 2-run single capped a 3-run first and Danny Charlton made the lead secure with a 2-run homer (#13) in the 8th.

Transactions
: A couple of bullpen pieces returned as closer Eric Lewis and lefty Branden Gammage came off the IL with David Marin and Danny Mauricio returned to Durham. Jordan Rodriguez, who has pitched well in relief, will get a shot in the rotation taking Marin's place.

The second game saw the Rays suffer an ugly 7-1 loss to Texas. Danny Morales (2-4) wasn't that bad but Branden Gammage gave up a key base hit to a lefty to allow 2 runs to score, leaving Morales with a 5.2 8 4 4 1 4 line.

Tampa Bay took the rubber match 4-1 behind a fine Joe Scheu outing and one big hit. Scheu (4-4) turned in his second straight excellent start at 7 2 0 0 2 5 and the Rays scored all 4 of their runs in the 3rd, capped by a bases-clearing Duk-yoon Ko triple.

Team record: 29-23
. Next up: The Angels come to the Trop for 3 games.
