New York Draws First Blood in World Championship Series With 9-6 Win
The New York Giants started the World Championship Series in style today, winning on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds by a score of 9-6 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Giants right fielder Mike Tiernan excelled. He went 4 for 5 with a triple, 3 singles, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI.
The game was all tied up in the top of the eighth, until Tiernan delivered big-time for New York, stroking a dramatic run-scoring single off Gus Weyhing. The game-changing hit put the Giants on top, 6-5.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Giants manager Monte Ward said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds in Philadelphia.

Raucous Philadelphia Baseball Grounds Crowd Propels Phillies to 13-4 Victory; Series Tied at 1
Behind a bravura effort from starter Kid Carsey, the Philadelphia Phillies topped the New York Giants by the score of 13-4 today and got their first win in the 1893 World Championship Series. Carsey threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs for the Phillies. The win moves Philadelphia into a 1-1 tie with New York.
Sam Thompson dealt the Giants a blow in the bottom of the second. Batting with the bases loaded and Philadelphia leading 4-3, Thompson, who led the NL in slugging percentage with .639 in 1887, hit a 1-1 fastball for a 2-run single.
"I had pretty good command out there," said Carsey.

Philadelphia Takes 2-1 Lead in World Championship Series
Riding the 3-hit performance of catcher Jack Clements, the Philadelphia Phillies got a road win against the New York Giants, 6-4, in Game 3 of the World Championship Series today. Clements was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Phillies, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1.
Philadelphia relied on the hitting of Ed Delahanty to pick up the win. The left fielder ripped a run-scoring triple in the top of the seventh inning to put the Phillies on top, 5-4. For the game, Delahanty had 1 triple and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
Delahanty called the triumph "a good team win."

Allen Blasts Giants, Phillies Take Game 6, 10-9
The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Giants will take the World Championship Series to a decisive 7th game. The Phillies got a dramatic walk-off victory in a must-win situation today to beat the Giants 10-9 at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds and force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Philadelphia shortstop Bob Gilman Allen went 2-5 with a home run, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Philadelphia first baseman Lave Cross, facing Amos Rusie, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Phillies the 10-9 win.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Philadelphia manager Harry Wright said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Championship Series in a hard-fought series with the New York Giants.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 12-3 victory at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds, Philadelphia lay claim to the franchise's 1st championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Ed Delahanty. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 83-50 and claimed first place in the National League.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Philadelphia in the days to come.
