Game 41: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps

A rather lackluster offensive performance by the Americans (17-24) resulted in Cleveland's (21-20) 3 to 1 victory. With the loss, Boston has now dropped 7 of 13 series played during the 1903 season, and is looking more and more like any meaningful run at a playoff spot is rather unlikely. I don't want to be too reactionary, but if the team is still sitting near the bottom of the standings come mid-June, I will look to make some changes to position for success 2 to 4 years down the road.

Jake Weimer (8-2) had a dominant performance, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 2 walks to cruise in the 103 pitch complete game victory; Game Score 78. Cy Young (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 53. As an aside, I had targeted Weimer as my top choice in the 1902 draft and hoped he would somehow fall to my draft spot.

The Cleveland offense was powered by Ed Delahanty (3 for 4, 2 Doubles, Run, RBI), Doc Gessler (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), and Harry Wolverton (2 for 4). The Americans were led by John Farrell (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base), Bill Lange (1 for 3, Walk, Stolen Base), and Jiggs Donahue (1 for 3, RBI).

Player of the Game: Jake Weimer
