Shortly after Guy Boucher lost his job as the Sens coach, he said in an interview that as an NHL head coach, you control your lineup only about 30-40% of the time. There are always directions coming from the GM to use a guy on the PP to showcase him for a trade, demands from the GM to play a certain young player to see what the team has, etc.
While not controlling the lines per say, they do have a say with who gets dressed and used in certain situations...as long as you believe what Boucher said.
