I found a nice woodcut of Alex McFarlan in the 12/27/1896 edition of the Savannah Morning News (spelled in the caption as McFarland). He had been engaged to become player/manager of Savannah but funds ran out quickly for 1897. He played for Terre Haute and Asheville instead. The 12/20/1896 make mention of him playing with Norfolk in 1896 to confirm this is the correct player.
