The Rays split their second straight two-game series and as a result stayed 4 games ahead of the Yankees atop the AL East.

Tampa Bay was up against one of the game's top pitchers in New York's Nathan Deschryver, and he dominated the Rays (8 3 1 1 1 9) in a 4-2 Yankee win. Nick Wallerstedt (4-5) took the loss after going 5 8 3 3 2 5 and Alex Rivas had 3 of the 4 Rays hits, scoring one run and driving in the other.

The Rays opened up an 8-1 lead with Joe Marlette on the mound and looked to be on easy street, but the Yankees got back to within 8-6 and chased Marlette in the 5th before Tampa Bay pulled away late to take a 13-6 slugfest. After being held to 4 hits the night before the Rays banged out a season-high 21 including 13 through the first 4 innings. 4 Rays had 3 hits apiece including Luis Berumen, who had a 3-run homer (#9) among his (also including 2 doubles) while Joe Stack (#10) and Danny Charlton (#19, driving in 3) also went yard. Marlette gave up a slam in the 5th with 2 out and put two more on, pulled after 101 pitches at 4.2 6 6 6 4 5. Branden Gammage (3-1) went the next 1 1/3 scoreless for the win.

Team record: 48-31. Next up: Off for 3 in Toronto against the slumping Jays, who have dropped to third place 5 games out.
