World Championship Series Game 1 Victory for Hoffer and Baltimore
The Baltimore Orioles started the World Championship Series in style today, downing the visiting Boston Beaneaters at Union Park by a score of 7-4 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Orioles right-hander Bill Hoffer threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.
The Orioles benefited from an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Baltimore was leading 2-1 when Jake Stenzel hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put Baltimore in front, 3-1.
"They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Hoffer said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Union Park in Baltimore.

Almost There: Boston On Cusp of World Championship Series Triumph After 10-3 Win
The Boston Beaneaters got a strong performance from pitcher Kid Nichols, who stymied the visiting Baltimore Orioles en route to a win, 10-3, in Game 4 of the World Championship Series today. The Orioles could never get a bead on the right-handed Nichols, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The Beaneaters now hold a 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Hugh Duffy, who finished 3rd in the NL in home runs with 17 in 1894, aided the Boston cause with a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the third. For the game, the left fielder went 1 for 4 with a double.
"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Nichols told the Boston Today.

Home Loss Shrinks Beaneaters Series Lead to 3-2
Arlie Pond was not ready to let the World Championship Series end.
With the Baltimore Orioles backed into a corner, the right-handed Pond held off the Boston Beaneaters. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 1 runs. The win cuts the series deficit for the Orioles to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Baltimore relied on the hitting of John McGraw to pick up the win. The third baseman ripped a run-scoring triple in the top of the eighth inning to put the Orioles on top, 2-1. For the game, McGraw had 1 triple and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Boston manager Frank Selee said following the tough loss.
Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Union Park in Baltimore.

Orioles Clip Beaneaters 5-4 in WCS Contest
The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Beaneaters will take the World Championship Series to a decisive 7th game. The Orioles got a dramatic walk-off victory in a must-win situation today to beat the Beaneaters 5-4 at Union Park and force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Boston left fielder Hugh Duffy was impressive in a losing effort. He went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the tenth, an error by the Beaneaters allowed the Orioles to score the winning run.
"This place went bonkers at the end," Robinson said.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Union Park in Baltimore.

Beaneaters Crowned Champions
A celebratory mood filled the air as the Boston Beaneaters closed out the season with a 7-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Union Park to capture the World Championship Series, 4-3.
Giving the Orioles credit for a hard-fought series, Beaneaters players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Major League Baseball champions.
"We felt like this was our year all season long," said left fielder Hugh Duffy, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."
It was the 5th in franchise history. During the National League regular season Boston put up a 83-52 record and finished second.
"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Baltimore manager Ned Hanlon. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."
