Pittsburgh Draws First Blood in World Championship Series With 4-1 Win
The Pittsburgh Pirates powered past the hometown Boston Americans, 4-1, in the opener of the World Championship Series at Huntington Avenue Grounds today. Pittsburgh starting pitcher Deacon Phillippe threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Pirates now lead the series 1-0.

Phillippe went the distance for Pittsburgh, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 3.

"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Phillippe said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston.

Thrice as Nice: Pittsburgh On Verge of Sweep after Walk-off Win
When the games really matter, the Pittsburgh Pirates put on their best show, beating the Boston Americans by a final score of 1-0 today. Jack Chesbro threw 10.0 innings of shutout ball. Pittsburgh now leads Boston 3-0 in the best-of-7 affair.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the tenth, an error by the Americans allowed the Pirates to score the winning run.

Chesbro called the win "a collective effort."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.

Home Loss Shrinks Pirates Series Lead to 3-1
In a remarkable effort, Cy Young single-handedly kept the Boston Americans in the playoffs.

The Boston Americans right-hander threw a complete game shutout on the road to prevent a Pittsburgh Pirates sweep, striking out 5 along the way. The Americans needed all he had, as their own offense struggled to get into gear. The 2-0 Boston win means the club now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Young, a native of Gilmore, Ohio, was dealing all game. He kept Pittsburgh hitters off-balance, while giving the Americans 9 quality innings. Young threw 143 pitches, allowing 8 hits and striking out 5.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Boston skipper Jimmy Collins.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Pirates Win World Championship Series
With a 4-0 win over the Boston Americans at Exposition Park today, the Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up their 3rd title in team history.

The Pirates left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game.

"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."

A jovial mood filled the air as Pittsburgh celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order.

"I hope they have a big celebration," Boston manager Jimmy Collins said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it."
