Game 92: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
A tough extra-innings game for the Americans (48-44) to lose. Despite having the lead in the 9th inning, they could not hold on and allowed the Athletics (55-37) to secure the 11th inning victory by a 8 to 7 score.
Starter Cy Falkenberg did not factor into the decision after allowing 7 earned runs on 13 hits, 4 walks, and 1 hit batsman in 8 2/3 innings of work; Game Score 28. Red Donahue pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball before turning it over to Mordecai Brown (13-10) who picked up the win for his 1 inning of relief work. On the other side of the ledger was Cy Young who likewise did not factor into the decision due to his surrendering 7 runs (5 earned) on 15 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 36. Closer Jose Ramos (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 walk.
With neither pitching staff having command of their pitches today, opposing batters were locked in. For Philadelphia, George Davis (4 for 6, 3 Runs, 2 Doubles), John Titus (2 for 5, Homerun Run, 2 RBIs), Tom McCreery (2 for 5, 2 Doubles, Run, Walk), and Honus Wager (3 for 6, Double, 2 Runs) each had a fine day at the plate. For Boston, Jiggs Donahue (4 for 6, Double, Run, 3 RBIs), Chick Stahl (2 for 6, 3 Runs, Stolen Base), and Harry Smoot (1 for 1, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss.
