Plank, Athletics Take Dramatic Game 1 for 1-0 Series Lead
The Philadelphia Athletics took the first game of the World Series in dramatic fashion today, topping the New York Giants 4-3 in an extra-inning walk-off win. Athletics left-hander Eddie Plank threw 10.0 innings of 5-hit ball.
The game came to an abrupt end with one out in the bottom of the tenth. On a pitch from Joe McGinnity, Lave Cross hit a run-scoring single. It gave Philadelphia the 4-3 win.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Plank said.

New York Win to Pull Even With Philadelphia
The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, 9-4 in Game 2 of the World Series today. Making an impact was catcher Roger Bresnahan, who was 3-5 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. The win moves New York into a 1-1 tie with Philadelphia in the series.
New York used the clutch hitting of Billy Gilbert to capture the win. The second baseman drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to give the Giants the lead, 5-4. For the game, Gilbert had 2 singles and 1 double in 4 at-bats.
"It was a solid team effort," said Bresnahan after the game.
The next game is set to be played for Saturday, October 14th , 1905 at Polo Grounds in New York.

Almost There: New York On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 4-3 Win
The New York Giants got a strong game from starter Joe McGinnity, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win.
The Giants took the 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics in Game 4 of the World Series in a 11th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the right-handed McGinnity. McGinnity threw 11.0 innings of 10-hit ball in the win, which gave the Giants a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, an error by the Athletics allowed the Giants to score the winning run.
"That was your kind of game, if you like high drama," said Giants manager John McGraw.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Polo Grounds in New York.

Home Loss Shrinks Giants Series Lead to 3-2
Facing elimination, the Philadelphia Athletics were looking for a savior. For today, at least, Rube Waddell delivered.
At Polo Grounds, the 29-year old pitched a game for the ages to fend off the New York Giants and help the Athletics close their deficit in the World Series. Waddell threw a 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the 7-0 Philadelphia win, striking out 6 and allowing 6 hits. The Athletics now trail 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Waddell, the Philadelphia left-hander, went 9 innings, allowing no runs on 6 hits. He collected 6 strikeouts.
"We'll savor this win," Waddell told the Philadelphia Chronicle, "then get ready for the next game."
The next game is set to be played for Wednesday, October 18th , 1905 at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.

Athletics Clip Giants 5-4 in WS Contest
Andy Coakley made sure the Philadelphia Athletics will see Game 7, even if he won't be hitting the field.
The Philadelphia right-hander emptied his gas tank in a 9-inning, 171-pitch complete game victory today. He threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball, helping the Athletics get past the New York Giants, 5-4, and take the World Series to a decisive 7th game.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Philadelphia right fielder Socks Seybold, facing Red Ames, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Athletics the 5-4 win.
"I told everyone I have a terrible disease and this might be my last season," Coakley said with a grin. "Hopefully that should get them extra motivated for Game 7."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Wins it All
The Philadelphia Athletics were good enough to get past the New York Giants at Columbia Park today and secure the 2nd championship in franchise history.
"When you wear Athletics on your shirt, you're good at something," Philadelphia skipper Connie Mack told the press.
Athletics right fielder Socks Seybold was named MVP of the series after he went .462 with no home runs and 6 runs batted in.
"It feels totally incredible," Seybold said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment."
The new champions capped off a great season with a 4-0 victory over the Giants to win the World Series 4-3.
