Athletics Clip Cubs 1-0 in WS Contest
Eddie Plank pitched a gem to help the Philadelphia Athletics escape with a tight 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in a low-scoring World Series contest today.
The left-handed Plank threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Athletics on a day when their offense dried up.
Philadelphia now leads the best-of-7 series 2-1.
Plank went the distance for Philadelphia. He allowed no runs on 6 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 0.
Plank said afterward that his team has grown over the course of the season, adding: "It feels good when a plan comes together."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.

Cubs Clip Athletics 3-2 in WS Contest
The Chicago Cubs topped the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 3-2 and moved into a 2-2 tie in the World Series today.
The largest share of the credit belongs to Chicago starter Harry McIntire, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball in the win.
The Cubs benefited from a costly error in the top of the sixth.
With Frank Chance at bat and Chicago leading 2-1, the Philadelphia miscue allowed Chicago to plate 1 and take the lead, 3-1.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Chance told the Chicago Gazette.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Athletics pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the Chicago Cubs.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 5-3 victory at West Side Grounds, Philadelphia lay claim to the franchise's 3rd championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Jack Coombs.
"But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 101-53 and claimed first place in the American League.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Philadelphia in the days to come.
