Game 107: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders

It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win! In a critical game for the teams, the Boston Americans (58-49) topped the New York Highlanders (64-43) by a score of 11 to 9. With the victory, Boston is 6 games out of the top spot with the Magic # now at 31.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision and this was a game that turned on timely hitting and which bullpen could get the critical outs. For the Americans, Jesse Tannehill took the mound and lasted 7 innings, allowing 9 earned runs on 15 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 13. Closer Jose Ramos (2-2; Blown Save #3) picked up the win on 2 "scoreless" innings of relief. For the Highlanders, Barney Wolfe got the nod for the start but lasted just 4 2/3 innings in which he permitted 9 runs (5 earned) on 14 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 8. Zeke Wilson was called in for 3 1/3 innings of play and kept the opposition of the board while scattering 5 hits. Christy Mathewson (17-12) was tagged with the loss for his 1 inning of play in which he served up 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.

Both teams had no problem getting the ball into play, with several fine hitting performances occurring. For Boston, Chick Stahl (5 for 6, Homerun, Run, RBI), Danny Shay (3 for 5, Double, 2 Runs), Bill Lange (3 for 5, 2 Runs, RBI, Walk), and Frank Chance (3 for 5, 2 Runs, RBI) played great. The Highlanders received help from Harry Davis (3 for 5, Double, Run, 3 RBIs), Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), and Harry Gleason (2 for 2, 2 Runs, RBI).

Player of the Game: Chick Stahl (Season: #2 / Career: #6)

***The decision of whether to push forward for a playoff run or to sell off and look towards the future is becoming more difficult. The team is playing much better, but the gap is just enough that I am unsure how aggressive I should be.***
