The Pirates came out swinging on Opening Day at PNC Park. After the Nationals scored 5 times in the 3rd inning to take a 6-2 lead (driving Quinn Priester from the game), Pittsburgh scored 7 times in the bottom of the 5th to take the lead. Jacob Gonzalez had the big hit, a 2-run single to put the Buccos ahead. Gonzalez went 2-4 with a trie, and drove 3 runs in the game.

Kyozo Nishida pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 5, as the Pirates beat the Marlins in the home opener in Miami. Ethan Workinger put the Pirates ahead with a solo home run in the 6th inning. Tyler Freeman and Roman Anthony each drove home runs in the 7th.
