1991 in ALB

In the second season for Arab League Baseball, the Western Conference’s best record came from 103-59 Jerusalem, earning back-to-back Levant Division titles. Defending conference champ Cairo again won the Nile Division, this time at 92-70. The big switch came in the Mediterranean Division. In 1990, Tripoli had the worst record in all of Arab League Baseball at 58-104. The Privateers completed a remarkable turnaround to win the division at 90-72, unseating last year’s winner Casablanca at 88-74.

Western Conference MVP was Bruins CF Khader Rahima. A 26-year old Iraqi righty, Rahima led in WAR (8.6) and runs (95) while adding 44 home runs, 104 RBI, and a .260/.317/.572 slash. Jerusalem’s Mhammed Abu won Pitcher of the Year. The 32-year old Algerian led in wins (24-7), innings (286), WHIP (0.89), K/BB (7.5), and quality starts (28). He added 7.2 WAR and 271 strikeouts with a 2.27 ERA.

Tripoli’s unprecedented turnaround season continued its magic into the postseason. The Privateers upset defending Western Conference champ Cairo 2-1 on the road in the road round. Then in the Conference Championship, Tripoli swept Jerusalem 3-0.

ALB’s best overall record came out of the Eastern Conference. Defending ALB champ Sulaymaniya improved upon last year’s mark with a 105-57 finish. The Sultans need all of that to hold off Baghdad in the Iraq Division, as the Brown Bears were 98-64. With no wild card in ALB, Baghdad misses the postseason despite having the EC’s second best record. Medina won the Saudi Division for back-to-back seasons. The Mastodons were 90-72, besting Mecca by six games. In the Gulf Division, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait each finished tied at 83-79. The Diamonds won tiebreaker games over both the Destroyers and Whales, giving Dubai the playoff spot.

Although Abu Dhabi missed the playoffs, they had the Eastern Conference’s MVP and Pitcher of the Year. The former was 3B Elann Isser, who won Rookie of the Year the prior season. The 23-year old Israeli righty led in home runs (51), RBI (117), total bases (354), slugging (.633), OPS (.982), wRC+ (189), and WAR (8.9). The latter was Mohammad “Beefsteak” Khatib, who led in WHIP (0.79), quality starts (30), and WAR (8.4). The 32-year old Jordanian also had a 19-8 record over 256.1 innings with 267 strikeouts and a 2.04 ERA.

In the first round of the playoffs, Dubai carried the momentum from their tiebreaker game wins to upset Medina 2-1. The Diamonds gave defending champ Sulaymaniya their best in the Eastern Conference Championship, but the Sultans survived 3-2 to claim back-to-back titles.

Sulaymaniya wouldn’t succeed in their efforts to be the first repeat ALB Champion. In the final, Tripoli handled them 4-1 to send the title to Libya and cap off a historic rebound season. CF Marwan Al-Zakaria was the finals MVP with the 31-year old Iraqi posting 15 hits 8 runs, 5 doubles, and 8 RBI over 11 playoff starts.

Other notes: Casablanca’s Ilwad Maxamed threw nine shutouts, setting a single-season record that still stands in 2037.
