Philadelphia Draws First Blood in World Series With 6-0 Win
The stakes were high. Grover Cleveland Alexander was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Navin Field today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Alexander held the Detroit Tigers to 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Philadelphia, which now leads 1-0.
Alexander allowed no runs on 2 hits over 9 innings for the Phillies. He walked 2 and struck out 5.
"There were things that we could've improved upon," said Phillies manager Pat Moran, "but all in all, I'm satisfied with our performance."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit.

Home Loss Shrinks Phillies Series Lead to 3-1
Behind a bravura effort from starter Bill James, the Detroit Tigers topped the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5-1 today and got their first win in the 1915 World Series. James threw 7.2 innings of 6-hit ball for the Tigers. The win narrows Detroit's deficit to 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, James had one of his most important at-bats: a run-scoring double off Al Demaree that staked the Tigers to a 2-1 lead.
James said his team "played with focus."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

Phillies Defeat Tigers
It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Philadelphia Phillies, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy.
The Phillies took a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Baker Bowl, winning their 2nd championship after taking the series 4-1.
"We've got grit," said Phillies starting pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."
The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the National League and a 104-50 record.
