Weaver Blasts Phillies, White Sox Take Game 1, 7-5
The Chicago White Sox started the World Series in style today, winning on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies at Baker Bowl by a score of 7-5 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. White Sox third baseman Buck Weaver excelled. He went 2 for 3 with a home run. He scored 2 runs.
Chicago used the clutch hitting of Joe Jackson to capture the win. The left fielder drilled a 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to give the White Sox the lead, 3-2. For the game, Jackson had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Weaver told the Chicago Gazette.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

Phillies Clip White Sox 3-2 in WS Contest
Behind a bravura effort from starter Eppa Rixey, the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Chicago White Sox by the score of 3-2 today and got their first win in the 1916 World Series. Rixey threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the Phillies. The win moves Philadelphia into a 1-1 tie with Chicago.
Rixey, a native of Culpeper, Virginia, was dealing all game. He kept Chicago hitters off-balance, while giving the Phillies 9 quality innings. Rixey threw 123 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 4.
"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said Rixey.
The next game is set to be played for Wednesday, October 11th , 1916 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Chicago Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WS
Starter Lefty Williams was sensational for the Chicago White Sox in his team's 4-2 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the World Series today. Williams pitched well, but Chicago picked up the win to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
With no one out in the top of the seventh, Dave Bancroft had a chance to do some damage. Philadelphia was trailing 3-0, but had runners on 1st and 3rd. Bancroft came to the plate against Lefty Williams, and hit into a double play. But it was not enough to complete a Philadelphia comeback.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Almost There: Chicago On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 2-0 Win
Eddie Cicotte pitched a gem to help the Chicago White Sox escape with a tight 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in a low-scoring World Series contest today. The right-handed Cicotte threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the White Sox on a day when their offense dried up. Chicago now leads the best-of-7 series 3-1.
Cicotte allowed no runs on 4 hits over 9 innings for the White Sox. He walked 2 and struck out 3.
"We did just enough to win," Cicotte said.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Home Loss Shrinks White Sox Series Lead to 3-2
Grover Cleveland Alexander was not ready to let the World Series end.
With the Philadelphia Phillies backed into a corner, the right-handed Alexander held off the Chicago White Sox. He threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Phillies to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Philadelphia relied on the hitting of Bert Niehoff to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to put the Phillies on top, 5-0. For the game, Niehoff had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
Niehoff said his team "played with focus."
The next game is set to be played for Sunday, October 15th , 1916 at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

Raucous Baker Bowl Crowd Propels Phillies to 3-1 Victory; Series Tied at 3
The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation today, the Phillies beat the White Sox 3-1 at Baker Bowl to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Philadelphia left-hander Eppa Rixey had a big role in the win. He threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball.
The White Sox had trouble solving Rixey, who surrendered 1 run on 5 hits over 9 innings.
"This was a good win for us," said Rixey. "It's one more step toward our ultimate goal."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

Phillies Triumph in 1916 World Series
It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Philadelphia Phillies, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy.
The Phillies took a 11-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Baker Bowl, winning their 3rd championship after taking the series 4-3.
"We've got grit," said Phillies second baseman Bert Niehoff, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."
The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the National League and a 97-57 record.
