1901 offseason news leading up to the Rookie Draft...
-The Milwaukee Brewers moved to St. Louis and became the St. Louis Browns.
-RF Sam Thompson (Washington Senators) retired from professional baseball. The Philadelphia Phillies, who he played for in the 1890s, retired number #11.
-The New York Giants, in honor of retired LF Jim O'Rourke, retired #75.
-The Cleveland Blues changed their name to the Cleveland Bronchos.
-The Cleveland Bronchos traded 36-year-old RP Bill Hart to the Pittsburgh Pirates, getting 21-year-old RP George Merritt and 24-year-old second baseman Truck Eagan in return.
-The Washington Senators signed free agent SHS Frank Connaughton to a 1-year contract worth a total of $980. The St. Louis Browns signed free agent CA Frank McManus to a 1-year contract worth a total of $680. The Boston Americans signed free agent 1B Lefty Herring to a 1-year contract worth a total of $690.
-The Detroit Tigers signed SP Frank Owen to a 2-year contract extension worth a total of $1,990.
