Trade time

This team has some flaws, and with the deadline approaching it was time to make a couple of moves.

The first:

Minnesota had pending free agent and veteran 33-year-old 3B Josh Abney on the block and we took him off their hands at the cost of a middling prospect. The key for us is that Abney is a 65 defender at the hot corner and gives us a defensive replacement for Luis Barela, whose D has cratered at the position. Abney is a .250-.260 hitter with moderate (55) power so he's not going to supplant Barela but the RH hitter will play 3B against lefties with Barela sliding over to first.

The second deal (I forgot to screen-shot the reactions but my AGM wasn't thrilled with it):

Tim Johnson has been brutal this year and we didn't have a real replacement for him. Now we do. Cervantes is rated 55/80/70 and has been a consistent 4-5 WAR starter for the last 10 years. Texas wanted to get out from under his $23M/year contract through next season (*) and agreed to pay half of it. Rutherford's a pretty good lefty reliever but we have two others on the staff. Johnson will move to the pen where hopefully his good stuff will make him a useful multi-inning reliever.

*Cervantes' 2055 vests if he pitches 180 innings. He's at 112 right now so it'll be a close call.
