Philadelphia Draws First Blood in World Series With 7-3 Win
The Philadelphia Athletics started the World Series in style today, winning on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals at League Park by a score of 7-3 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Athletics left-hander Eddie Plank threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.
Plank had a critical at-bat in the top of the seventh for Philadelphia, coming through with a run-scoring single to put Philadelphia in front, 3-2.
"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Plank said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in St. Louis.

Philadelphia Tops St. Louis Again, 7-6
Riding the 2-hit performance of first baseman Fred Snodgrass, the Philadelphia Athletics got a road win against the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6, in Game 2 of the World Series today. Snodgrass went 2-3 with a triple and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Athletics, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0.
The most crucial at-bat for Philadelphia came in the top of the ninth inning. That's when Snodgrass stroked a 1-1 fastball to right for a bases-clearing triple, putting Philadelphia up, 6-5.
Cardinals manager Mauricio Martinez did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.

When the games really matter, the Philadelphia Athletics put on their best show, beating the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 3-0 today. Bugs Raymond threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. Philadelphia now leads St. Louis 3-0 in the best-of-7 affair.
Philadelphia won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs and Tom Hughes on the mound for St. Louis, right fielder Harry Wolter hit a dramatic 3-run home run, bringing Athletics fans to their feet.
"Things aren't going great right now," St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez said. "But you don't need me to tell you that."

St. Louis Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1
Walter Johnson was not ready to let the World Series end.
With the St. Louis Cardinals backed into a corner, the right-handed Johnson held off the Philadelphia Athletics. He threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Cardinals to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Johnson pitched a complete game for St. Louis. The 22-year-old right-hander was charged with 2 runs on 4 hits. He struck out 8 during his 113-pitch performance.
"Good pitching and timely hitting is a recipe for success," said Johnson.

St. Louis Wins to Cut Philadelphia Lead to 3-2
George Winter was not ready to let the World Series end.
With the St. Louis Cardinals backed into a corner, the right-handed Winter held off the Philadelphia Athletics. He threw 10.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Cardinals to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Bris Lord, the 27-year-old right fielder, had a direct impact on the outcome. Lord contributed a 2-run single in the top of the tenth inning to put St. Louis up, 5-3.
"I hate extra innings," St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez said. "It makes everyone more tired, wears out the bullpen, wears out the fans. Even winning doesn't make me feel good about it."
Game 6 is scheduled for Tuesday at League Park in St. Louis.

One for the Ages: Cardinals Beat Athletics on 15th Inning Walk-Off
The St. Louis Cardinals went the distance and then some at League Park today to drag themselves back into a tie with the Philadelphia Athletics.
It took 15 innings to settle Game 6 of the World Series, but St. Louis eventually took a walk-off 3-2 win behind the efforts of starting pitcher Bob Wicker. Wicker threw 13.0 innings of 6-hit ball to aid the St. Louis cause. The clubs are now tied 3-3 in their best-of-7 series.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 15th inning, when St. Louis first baseman Myron Grimshaw, facing Frank Morrissey, had a run-scoring single. It gave the Cardinals the 3-2 win.
"There's nothing like the postseason," said Wicker, "to ramp up the pressure."

Cardinals Take Title
It's party time in St. Louis. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling.
The St. Louis Cardinals have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 1910 World Series today. They defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 4-2 at League Park to officially wrap up the series 4-3.
Asked how it feels to be a champion, right fielder Bris Lord was to the point.
"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."
The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. St. Louis finished the regular season 98-56 and claimed first place in the NL.
