World Series Game 1 Victory for Ford and Boston
The Boston Red Sox started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting St. Louis Cardinals at Huntington Avenue Grounds by a score of 8-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Red Sox right-hander Russ Ford threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball.
The Red Sox benefited from a costly error in the bottom of the second. With Frank Schulte at bat and Boston leading 2-0, the St. Louis miscue allowed Boston to plate 2 and take the lead, 4-0.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Boston manager Jimmy McAleer said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston.

Game 2, October 16th, 1911, Huntington Avenue Grounds
St. Louis Win Knots Series at 1
Behind a bravura effort from starter George Winter, the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-2 today and got their first win in the 1911 World Series. Winter threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the Cardinals. The win moves St. Louis into a 1-1 tie with Boston.
Runs were scarce in this one. So, Lee Tannehill's at-bat in the top of the ninth was vitally important. With no one out, the St. Louis shortstop hit a sacrifice fly, to give his team a 3-2 lead.
"It has been an incredible experience today," Winter said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it."
Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at League Park in St. Louis.

Cardinals Rally Past Red Sox to Claim 2-1 Series Lead
When the games really matter, the St. Louis Cardinals put on their best show, beating the Boston Red Sox by a final score of 7-6 today. Hans Lobert went 4-5 with 3 triples, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. St. Louis now leads Boston 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
Myron Grimshaw was the walk-off hero for St. Louis. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"We lost," Boston manager Jimmy McAleer said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

Almost There: St. Louis On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 5-4 Win
A clutch 9th inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a walk-off win over the Boston Red Sox and a 3-1 lead in the World Series at League Park today. Young right-hander Walter Johnson, 23, pitched well for the Cardinals. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, with two out and the game tied, 4-4, shortstop Ed Abbaticchio won it for St. Louis. With a runner on 2nd, Abbaticchio hit a first pitch fastball from Russ Ford for a run-scoring double, giving his team the 5-4 win.
"We're happy," Johnson told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."

Game 5, October 20th, 1911, League Park
Cardinals Take Title
The St. Louis Cardinals ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 to win the World Series.
St. Louis won the series 4-1, capturing the title for the 2nd time.
"We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez. "It's a great feeling."
The champs finished the regular season 98-56 and claimed first place in the NL.
In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and first baseman Jake Daubert said the Cardinals have "great fans and they deserve this."
"I am so happy for our city right now," he said.
