Feature: An Inside Look at Oberland's CF/SP Zaire Inquisitor
When he was selected as the 5th overall pick in the 2303 draft by the Oberland T-51s, he was drafted purely on his prospects as a two-way player. A member of the Nauset Beach Lurk Hunters of the Cape Cod Youth League, Inquisitor only played two years of baseball.
His high school numbers did not stand out at all. As a CF, he started 64 of 74 games with the Lurk Hunters, batting .245 with 16 home runs, 38 RBI, and 36 runs. As a pitcher, he started 19 games, going 11-5 with a 2.08 ERA in 138.2 IP with 31 walks and 101 strikeouts.
In two seasons in the GBRL with the Lynn Fortune Finders, struggled to find his footing his first season, batting just .249, but he upped that average to .355 in 2305. Overall, in two seasons, he started 121 of 160 games, batting .315 with 32 home runs, 101 RBI, and 87 runs.
His pitching went in the opposite direction. After starting 23 games in 2304, going 11-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 161.0 IP with 54 walks and 126 strikeouts, he struggled in 2305. He only started six games, going 3-3 with a 5.35 ERA in 37.0 IP with 15 walks and 30 strikeouts.
Fast forward to 2306. Inquisitor was promoted by the T-51s to the BMU squad (AA), the Mystic Pines Raybathers. There, Inquisitor made a leap in both hitting and pitching. In 88 games with 87 starts at CF, Inquisitor batted .417, slamming 23 home runs, 91 RBI, 89 runs, 39 walks, and just 18 strikeouts. He led the BMU in batting average, hits (144), and WPA (6.05). His 144 hits set the BMU single-season record.
On the mound, he started 22 games, going 12-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 141.2 IP with 26 walks and 97 strikeouts. He led the BMU in wins (tied), WAR (4.7), innings pitched, and quality starts (15).
Now, Inquisitor has done something no other player in CBO association history has ever done. He won both the Commonwealth Association's Medford Memorial Hitter Award AND the Milton General Pitcher Award.
What's next for Inquisitor? Well, it appears that he may either move up one more rung to play with Oberland's MML (AAA) team, the Lynn Fortune Finders (which moved to the MML from the GBRL in 2306) or he may end up with the T-51s. Inquisitor is considered Oberland's top prospect and was ranked #17 by OSA scouts. That number is sure to be better in 2307.
Just as a comparison, the 2303 draft's top 5 went this way:
Round 1, Pick 1 - Spectacle Island: SP Jalep Temper (Current: Finch Farm CBO - 29 G, 13 GS, 4-10, 2 SV, 4.41 ERA)
Round 1, Pick 2 - Egret Ninjas: SP Hry Caje, age 17 (Current: Egret's AA Plymouth Pilgrims - 22 GS, 6-4, 6.15 ERA, #2 Prospect)
Round 1, Pick 3 - The Slog Ghouls: LF Elijah Booke (Current: The Slog's AAA Burlington Ferals - Stats with AA Mass Pike Radroaches - 88 GS, .384, 17 HR, 68 RBI, #23 Prospect)
Round 1, Pick 4 - Quincy Gunners: C Slush Carfixer (Current: Quincy CBO - Stats with AAA Malden Grognaks - 43 GS, .290, 14 HR, 45 RBI, #60 Prospect)
Round 1, Pick 5 - Oberland T-51s: LF Zaire Inquisitor

"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."
The top hitter put up a .354 batting average this year, as well as a .462 on-base percentage. He played 74 games and racked up 98 hits, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 26 home runs, 62 RBIs and 86 runs scored.
He received 38 first place votes out of a possible 40. Rip Risk of the West Quincy Atomatoys finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Bogut Kuternoga of the Weymouth Locksmiths finished third.
