It's extremely difficult to figure out who is more deserved of a Cy Young this season, Vida Blue or Wilbur Wood? Both fashioned sensational seasons that included 20+ wins.
Blue set the tone for the NLCS with a complete effort in a Game 1 shutout and Wood was almost as brilliant. The southpaw allowed four hits, a walk and fanned five over eight superb innings as the Mets seized a 2-0 advantage in the NLCS with a 4-1 decision over the Astros.
Wood was most likely going to get the ninth for a shot at a complete game, but the Mets in the midst of a mild rally in the eighth, Wood was lifted for pinch-hitter Ken Boswell, who grounded out and stall the uprising.
Willie Crawford got the Mets going with a solo homer in the third. Johnny Bench and Buddy Harrelson each singled home a run in the fourth when the edge extended to 3-0.
Lee May narrowed the gap with a towering solo home run to left in the sixth but Roberto Clemente rebuilt it in the seventh with his base hit scored Harrelson to make it 4-1.
The two clubs will enjoy a travel day to Houston for Game 3 where Bert Blyleven gets the ball with a chance to complete the sweep for the Mets against Pat Dobson.
