Game 1, October 10th, 1906, Exposition Park
World Series Game 1 Victory for Waddell and Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting New York Highlanders at Exposition Park by a score of 4-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates left-hander Rube Waddell threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.
Honus Wagner dealt the Highlanders a blow in the bottom of the third. Batting with the bases loaded and Pittsburgh leading 1-0, Wagner, who finished 5th in the NL in runs with 93 in 1903, hit a 2-2 screwball for a 2-run single.
Highlanders manager John McGraw did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Pirates lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 11th, 1906, Exposition Park
Wagner, Pirates Sink Highlanders Again in Game 2
Riding the 3-hit performance of shortstop Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates stopped the visiting New York Highlanders, 6-3, in Game 2 of the World Series today. Wagner went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0.
The Pirates took a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing New York hurler Bob Rhoads with two outs, Wagner hit a 2-run home run.
"Every team in baseball loses," Highlanders manager John McGraw said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Hilltop Park in New York.

Win Extends Pirates Lead to 3-0 Over Highlanders
Riding the 3-hit performance of third baseman Tommy Leach, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the New York Highlanders, 6-3, in Game 3 of the World Series today. Leach was 3-3 with 2 triples, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 times for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 0.
The tide might have turned with no one out in the bottom of the eighth, had not Jesse Tannehill made a big pitch. With runners on 1st and 2nd and the Highlanders trailing 6-2, he retired Harry Lumley, who lined out.

Game 4, October 14th, 1906, Hilltop Park
New York Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1
Harry Howell was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field.
The right-hander pitched the New York Highlanders to victory at Hilltop Park today, staving off the Pittsburgh Pirates, who remain one game away from a title. Howell threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Highlanders to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Bobby Wallace was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Highlanders shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"We lost," Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

Pirates lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 16th, 1906, Hilltop Park
World Series to Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Pirates were good enough to get past the New York Highlanders at Hilltop Park today and secure the 3rd championship in franchise history.
"When you wear Pirates on your shirt, you're good at something," Pittsburgh skipper Fred Clarke told the press.
Pirates center fielder Homer Smoot was named MVP of the series after he went .409 with no home runs and 1 RBI.
"It feels totally incredible," Smoot said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment."
The new champions capped off a great season with a 8-7 victory over the Highlanders to win the World Series 4-1.
