1993 in CABA

Three-time defending CABA champion Monterrey was yet again the top team in the Mexican League. At 108-54, the Matadors won the North Division and had the best record in CABA. Monterrey also extended their postseason streak to six seasons. Tijuana was second in the division at 99-63, earning the wild card by six games over Torreon. This gave the Toros repeat wild cards. In a tight South Division, Ecatepec (91-71) was one ahead of defending division champ Leon (90-72). The Explosion ended a four-year postseason drought.

Tijuana’s Jacky Castillo earned Mexican League MVP with a powerful season. He led the league in runs (131), home runs (64), RBI (152), total bases (414), slugging (.710), OPS (1.106), wRC+ (226), and WAR (11.9). His 152 RBI was the first 150+ RBI season since 1971, two short of the CABA record of 154. The Toros also had Pitcher of the Year in Carlito Silva. It was one standout season in an otherwise unremarkable career with the 24-year old lefty posting a 19-6 record, 2.12 ERA, 254.1 innings, 259 strikeouts, and 6.1 WAR.

Ecatepec had home field advantage and the one-game handicap as a division champ over Tijuana in the wild card round despite the weaker record. The Explosion beat the Toros 3-1, sending Ecatepec to the Mexican League Championship Series for the first time since 1975. However, the Monterrey dynasty continued with a 4-2 MLCS win over the Explosion. The Matadors as the first to four-peat as ML champs since Mexico City’s seven-peat from 1967-73.

Defending Caribbean League champion Trinidad set a franchise record, claiming the Island Division at 106-56. The Trail Blazers took the division by 21 games over Puerto Rico. At 82-80, Santo Domingo’s playoff streak ended at four seasons. In the Continental Division, Honduras bounced back after a 77-win 1992. The Horsemen were 99-63 for their third division title in four years. Guatemala (91-71) was second and took the wild card spot, ending an eight-year postseason drought. Salvador, the conference finalist the last year, missed the field at 85-77.

Caribbean League MVP was Trinidad RF Felipe Mendez. In his second full season, the 27-year old Cuban lefty led the league in home runs (65), RBI (134), total bases (385), slugging (.742), OPS (1.115), and wRC+ (201). He added 8.9 WAR, a .312 average, and 117 runs. Haiti was a lousy 71-91, but they had the Pitcher of the Year in Marvin Ramos. The 26-year old Dominican was the leader in ERA (2.42), and WHIP (1.01). Ramos added a 16-13 record over 252.2 innings with 248 strikeouts and 6.6 WAR.

Honduras swept Guatemala in the wild card round. This pitted the 1991 Caribbean League champion Horsemen in the CLCS against the defending champion Trinidad. The Trail Blazers had home field advantage, but Honduras got the upset 4-2. This set up a rematch of the 1991 Central American Baseball Association Championship and a battle between possibly the two most stories franchises in CABA. Both the Horsemen and Matadors entered with 14 league pennants apiece, more than any other CABA franchise.

The 83rd CABA Championship also saw Monterrey hoping to become the second franchise to four-peat as CABA champs. Honduras denied that in a seven game thriller, getting revenge for 1991. Despite their overall success, this was the first ring for the Horsemen since 1963 and their sixth overall (1926, 40, 42, 58, 63, 93). They are tied with the Matadors for six CABA titles, although they are both still behind Mexico City (10) and Santo Domingo (7).

Other notes: Ruben Chavez became the 16th to 1500 career RBI.
