October 3-5, 2036: vs Boston (3)

The Rays used mostly reserves in two of the three final play-it-out games of the regular season but still managed to sweep Boston to head into the playoffs on a winning note.

Danny Morales helped pitch the Rays to a 6-1 win in the opener. The righty finished the year 12-9, 3.84 after a solid 5 5 1 1 1 4 final regular season outing and homers from Justin Blackwell (#15, a 2-run shot) and Danny Arroyave (#31, solo) backed him.

Rookie Leo Gutierrez pitched the game of his professional career, leading Tampa Bay to a 2-0 win in the second game. The young lefty was a dominant 6 2 0 0 1 10 and finishes the year 3-4, 4.13.in 13 starts. Eric Lewis completed the shutout and ended his season with 37 saves and Willie Gutierrez homered (#8).

Transaction: OF Bobby Marin and RP Alden Segui were activated from their rehab assignments.

The Rays completed the sweep with a 5-2 win over Boston in the finale. Jeff Coblentz (3-3) was in good form at 5 2 1 1 2 4 in the fill-in start with Jadon Smith earning his 7th save, and Luis Cisneros led the offense by going 2-4 with a homer (#7) and 3 RBI. Danny Arroyave had an early sac fly but couldn't get one more ribbie later and finished on 99.

Final Regular Season Record: 99-63
. Next up: We await the winner of the Kansas City-Cleveland wild card series in the ALDS in about 5-6 days. The Royals emerged from the 4-team pile-up for the third wild card, winning over the final two days while red-hot Detroit, which had won 12 straight games and moved into sole possession of the third WC on Friday, lost on Saturday and Sunday to slip back.
