1997 in EBF

The top seed in the EBF Northern Conference was Glasgow at 105-57 atop the British Isles Division. The Highlanders earned repeat playoff bids, having been the wild card last year. They swapped spots with defending NC champ Birmingham, who took the wild card at 89-73. The Bees extended their postseason streak to seven seasons, finishing two games ahead of Stockholm and three ahead of Copenhagen. It was Berlin repeating as North Central Division winners at 102-60. The Northwest had Paris (101-61) on top for the second time in three years. Last year’s winner Amsterdam was a distant second at 83 wins.
Paris 3B Giordano Dupuis was Northern Conference MVP, living up to the eight-year, $21,800,000 extension the Poodles had given him the prior year. The 29-year old French switch hitter led in RBI (155), total bases (399), slugging (.662), OPS (1.072), wRC+ (204), and WAR (11.5). He added 130 runs, 209 hits, 49 home runs, and a .347 average. Birmingham’s Lindsey Brampton won a historic seventh straight Pitcher of the Year, leading with 464 strikeouts, 0.83 WHIP, 7 shutouts, and 10.5 WAR. The 29-year old Englishman also had a 2.63 ERA and 16-8 record over 277 innings. He joined Hall of Famer Jean-Luc Roch as the only EBF pitchers to win POTY seven or more times.
Glasgow topped their divisional foe Birmingham 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs, while Paris edged Berlin 3-2. For the Highlanders, this was their first Northern Conference Championship appearance since 1990, while the Poodles hadn’t gotten that far since 1970. In the finale, Paris picked up the pennant in five games over Glasgow. It was the Poodles’ fifth pennant (1952, 56, 63, 70, 97).

The Southwest and Southeast Divisions were both intense as both saw battles for division titles, the Southern Conference’s top seed and the one wild card. Lisbon claimed the top mark at 97-65 to extend the Clippers’ playoff streak to seven years. Defending European Champion Barcelona was four back in the Southwest at 93-69. Athens secured the Southeast at 96-66 for their second division title in three years. Zagreb was three back at 93-69, tied with the Bengals for the wild card. The one-game tiebreaker went to the Gulls, ousting the defending champs and sending Zagreb to its third playoff berth in four years. The one non-competitive division was the South Central with Zurich at 91-71. The Mountaineers won the division for the third straight year and the 24th time in 25 years.
Lisbon CF Willy Fierro won his third Southern Conference MVP despite missing a month to injury. He still pulled a conference best 11.1 WAR in 126 games and led in slugging (.691), OPS (1.105), and wRC+ (207). The 32-year old Spaniard added a .351 average and 38 home runs. Barcelona’s Anders Maurstad was a repeat Pitcher of the Year winner, leading in WAR (9.8), K/BB (8.2), and quality starts (27). The 28-year old Norwegian lefty had a 2.75 ERA and 294 strikeouts over 288 innings with a 15-12 record.
Lisbon topped Zurich 3-1 and Athens outlasted Zagreb 3-2 in the first round of the playoffs. This set up a rematch of the 1995 Southern Conference Championship, which the Clippers claimed over the Anchors in a sweep. The 1997 edition needed all seven games, but the end result was the same with Lisbon over Athens. The Clippers won their fourth pennant in nine years (1989, 92, 95, 97). It was their fifth overall, having also won in 1956.

Interestingly enough, the 1956 title for Lisbon came over Paris, their foe in the 1997 European Championship. They seemed well on their way as the Clippers won the first three games of the series. The Poodles pulled off the incredible rally to win the series in seven, earning their second-ever ring (1970). NC MVP Giordano Dupuis led the charge as finals MVP, posting 20 hits, 13 runs, 3 doubles, 6 home runs, and 16 RBI over 17 playoff starts. This was the second EBF final to see a 3-0 rally, joining Zagreb’s 1960 title over Brussels.

Other notes: Glasgow’s Carsten Dal broke the EBF stolen bases record with 135, besting Cristopher Boyle’s record of 128 from 1986. As of 2037, Dal’s 135 is still the EBF record. Dal also scored 140 runs, becoming the sixth to score 140+ in a season. Paris’s Remy Morel had 57 doubles, falling one short of Franco Pulvirenti’s 58 from 1963. Morel also had 251 hits, three away from Franco Gilbert’s 254 from 1988. Birmingham’s Gonzalo Argueta set a single-season record with a 0.29 BB/9. He had only six walks over 186.1 innings. Vienna’s Jonas Schulz struck out 20 against Belgrade, making him the seventh EBF pitcher with a 20+ K game. RF Ugo Gottschall won his seventh Gold Glove. CF Willy Fierro won his seventh Silver Slugger.
