I think this may have been it. Friday night I thought I had updated my graphics card, but as usual when I try to do things like this it's a lot of bumbling and scuffling. Well, today I tried again and I now see how it works.
Good news is, I've now opened and closed the game several times and I'm not getting the strobe flash. I still get it when using away uniforms, but I've been turning them off for years due to the strobe, so that's no big deal at all.
