April 10-12, 2037: vs Texas (3)
Rays took 2 of 3 from the Rangers over the weekend, getting some fine pitching in the process but with most of the offense concentrated in one game.
Transaction: Claimed P Ken Battle on waivers from Seattle, optioned P Dwayne Marion to AAA Durham.
Battle is a 31-year-old lefty reliever who's rated 60/45/65 and will give us more depth in the pen. He's a control artist who had 2.95 ERA a 4/42 BB/K ratio in 54 games with the Cards last year.
And that one game was the opener as they routed the Rangers 11-1. Joe Stack's blazing start to the season continued with a 4-hit, 6-RBI game which saw him hit his 4th homer in 5 games, a 3-run shot to break it open in the 3rd, and a bases-clearing double in the 8th. The Rays also got a 2-run shot from Luis Cisneros (#2) and a a solo blast from Art Bing in his first start of the season. This was all more than enough for Mario Urizar in his Rays debut as he went an impressive 8 7 1 1 0 3 for the win.
Joe Marlette and the Rangers' Victor Pineda locked up in a pitchers' duel in the second game with neither team scoring through the first 7 before the Rays blinked first and ended up losing 3-0. Marlette left with two on and two out in the 8th and Jadon Smith came on early in the critical situation but gave up an RBI double before Ruben Abeyta allowed a 2-run homer in the 9th. Marlette (0-1) took the tough-luck loss after going 7.2 6 1 1 0 7 while the bats could only scratch out four hits.
Runs were at a premium again in the finale but this time the Rays scored them in a 3-0 win. Danny Morales (1-0) was dominant at 7 2 0 0 1 8 and this time Jadon Smith got the job done with his 2nd save. Wander Franco's 2-run homer (#2) in the 5th broke the ice and Mal Stephens added an RBI double in the 7th for insurance.
Team record: 4-3. Next up: Off to Fenway for 4 games against the Red Sox.
