BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 July 2308

The July Super Post, Part 2

BMU Analysis

Teams are now through 51 of their scheduled 88 games, and we can only hope this group of prospects keeps fighting to show how good they can be. Division leaders are Taffington Boathouse (Egr) of the Dark Hollow Pond League, Mystic Pines (Obe) in the Cambridge League, Neponset Park (Sal) in the Downtown Boston League, and Forest Grove (FtH) in the Glowing Sea League.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - When Mountainside Rockhand stepped up to the plate in June he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month award.

The young Fiddler's Green first baseman posted a .411 batting average with 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 21 runs. Rockhand also worked pitchers for 13 walks to post a .506 on-base percentage.

This year Rockhand has batted at a .395 pace with 32 hits, 9 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 23 times.

MA Hitter - Winslow Beaver may be much younger than other hitters in the Massachusetts Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in June to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 19-year-old Boston Common first baseman hit .423 with 11 home runs, 23 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

This year Beaver has socked 66 hits in 181 at-bats for a .365 average with 20 home runs. He is getting on base at a .422 pace and his totals also include 50 RBIs and 39 runs scored.

CA Pitcher - June's top hurler was Mike Mancia of Woburn. He shackled Commonwealth Association hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with a sparkling 4-0 mark.

The 21-year-old Mancia added 24 strikeouts in 30 innings and 12 walks to his season record and compiled a 3.00 ERA. Other clubs hit .268 against him.

In 12 starts this season Mancia has recorded a 5-1 record and a 4.95 ERA.

MA Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month has been picked and the Massachusetts Association trophy went to Mayoral Shelter hurler Stranger Backrubman for his strong performance in June.

During the month, Backrubman was impressive with a 1.73 ERA and 4 wins and no losses. In 26 innings he struck out 22 and gave up 24 hits and 8 walks.

This year Backrubman has gone 5-4 with an ERA of 4.21 and has 65 strikeouts in 72.2 innings.

GBRL Analysis

There is still only one division where a team has a huge lead. That is in the Southeast Division where the Park Street AntAgonizers (Sal) have an 11-game lead. Other division leaders are Greentop Nursery (JP) in the Northeast, Nuka Express (Star) in the Northwest, and Pioneer Park (FtH) in the Southwest.

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - For a rookie just breaking in, Jim Fry certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the NL Batter of the Month award for June.

The 21-year-old left fielder for the Belmont Sneakers hit .453 with 5 home runs, 20 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

So far this season Fry has hit .374 with 11 home runs, 45 RBIs and scored 35 times.

SL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 20 Pagetti Rook has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Roadside Pines Cosmos star can enjoy the numbers he put up in June, which have garnered him the nod as the South League Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .492 average with 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

This year Rook is hitting at a .389 pace with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. He has played in 51 games and scored 52 times.

NL Pitcher - The North League scribes have announced June's Pitcher of the Month and have given the award to Chris Brahmin of Breakheart Banks. He was one tough cookie on the mound last month with a fine 4-0 mark to prove it.

The Breakheart Banks star made 5 starts with a 1.69 ERA and surrendered 29 hits in 37.1 innings. He struck out 47 and walked 11.

So far this season Brahmin has a record of 5-5 with 105 strikeouts and 27 walks in 84.1 innings and a 2.99 ERA.

SL Pitcher - Over the past month Pokey Chatman has turned quite a few heads. He's young, talented and able to pitch with the established arms in the South League. He proved all that and now he's been named June's Pitcher of the Month.

The rookie for the Park Street AntAgonizers posted 5-0 mark and a 2.79 ERA. In 5 starts he tossed 42 innings, permitted 28 hits and fanned 46 batters.

This season Chatman has a 8-2 record with a 3.11 ERA.

BCAC Analysis

The BCAC remains a heavily competitive league from top to bottom in its inaugural season. In the North Division, the CIT Engineers lead over Bunker Hill University by two games. In the South Division, Northeastern University leads by two games over Boston College.

BCAC Players of the Month

BCAC Hitter - The Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference Batter of the Month has been picked for June and the honor goes to the Harvard Crimson Shell Lob.

He compiled a .395 batting average with 32 hits and 6 home runs, along with 13 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Lob is presently batting .368 with 19 home runs, 55 runs scored and 40 RBIs. His OBP is .439.

BCAC Pitcher - Downy Drugger of CIT excelled on the mound in June with a 3-0 record and was named the Pitcher of the Month in the Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Drugger restricted opposing batters to 22 base hits and a .237 batting average. He rang up 25 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks, and fashioned a 1.85 ERA.

To date this season Drugger is 6-3 with 3 starts and an ERA of 4.38 with 68 strikeouts in 74 innings.

BCAC All-Star Game

All-Star Boston College Eagles' left fielder Tom Bomb had a night to remember.

Not only did he take the field with the game's best players, he was also a huge factor in the 5-1 South Division victory over the North Division All-Stars.

"We had a meeting before the game, and I was struck by the talent in the room. Old stars, young stars, it's a game I'll never forget," Bomb said. "I talked to a few of my friends from back home, and they told me to go out and win the game for them. I'm sure they'll be thrilled."

It is time to honor the elite players in the Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference. The league office today announced the names of the players selected to play in the annual league All-Star classic.

SCYL Analysis

Teams have played 53 games so far with just 17 to go. Here are the division leaders:

Cape Cod Bay - Truro
Nantucket Sound - Nauset Beach
Seekonk River - Woodlawn and Pawtucket
Narragansett Bay - New Bedford

SCYL Players of the Month

CCL Hitter - Charles Towner is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Provincetown right fielder joined that select company when the Cape Cod League announced the results of June's voting.

Towner totaled 37 hits, 7 walks, 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 27 runs scored last month to put together a .474 batting average and .528 on-base percentage.

A look at his current stats shows Towner with a .386 average, 14 home runs, 38 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has played in 51 games.

PL Hitter - Not known for his offensive prowess, Tram Melstu set the league afire in June and took home the Providence League Batter of the Month award.

The New Bedford first baseman posted a steady .383 batting average, 11 home runs, 29 RBIs and 25 runs.

This season Melstu is hitting .345 with 21 home runs.

CCL Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month for June has been picked and the Cape Cod League award went to Wareham hurler, Melvin Terminator.

During the month, Terminator was impressive with a 0.70 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 51.2 innings he struck out 68 and gave up 27 hits and 9 walks.

This year Terminator has a 7-1 record with a 1.89 ERA.

PL Pitcher - Arwen Gonar really strutted his stuff in June with 4 wins and no losses and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Providence League. The New Bedford starter was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 41 innings of work, Gonar limited opposing batters to 39 base hits and a .257 batting average. He totaled 37 strikeouts, issued 12 walks and had a 2.41 ERA.

This season Gonar has a 7-1 record with a 3.66 ERA in 15 starts.

SCYL All-Star Game

Jay Gabby shined brightly tonight against the best talent that the SCYL has to offer.

The all-star was named MVP for the annual mid-season showcase held at Guaranteed Rate Field, as his Cape Cod League All-Stars downed the Providence League All-Stars by a count of 8-6.

"It's humbling to even play in a game like this with legends of the sport all around you," he said.

Gabby went 3 for 4 to capture the honor.

Looking at his career stats, Gabby is batting .354 and has totaled 19 home runs.

What's the best league? The Cape Cod League or the Providence League? The answer will be found in the Southern Commonwealth Youth League All-Star Game. All the votes have been counted and tabulated, all the players have been selected, and they will decide the question on the baseball diamond.
