BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

13 July 2308

CBO Analysis

We are just one week from the All-Star Break, and three teams are still vying to be the top team in the CBO, while there are several other contenders and up-and-comers in the league hoping to take home the ultimate trophy.

If the playoffs were to start today, these would be the seedings:

NCA
1. Salem
2. Sunshine Tidings
3. Nordhagen Beach
4. Bunker Hill
5. Starlight

Salem took a slight lead in the NCA for the top record, which also counts as the CBO's top record. As mentioned, the Witch Hats have never been to the playoffs, but they do have a solid nine-game lead over the 6th-best team (Easy Town) in the NCA, which gives them a great chance with just 48 games to play in the regular season.

Speaking of the Assaultrons, an unsteady 3-7 mark the past two weeks, only better in the NCA than the CBO's worst team, Concord, has dropped them two games out of the wildcard race with other teams like The Slog, Nahant, and County Crossing not all that far back.

SCA
1. Vault 81
2. Spectacle Island
3. Oberland
4. University Point
5. Egret

Vault 81 continues to win at a steady pace, including a nice series win over Roxbury to keep the Rad Sox out of playoff contention. Spectacle Island struggled the past two weeks, while University Point has gotten hot and surpasses Jamaica Plain, whom they swept, for 2nd place in the ML.

For the wildcard spot, the Ninjas' two greatest threats right now are the Red Rockets and Quincy, in which Egret leads by three games in that race. Like Salem in the NCA, Vault 81 leads the 6th-place team by nine games, giving them a good chance to be playoff bound in 2308.

Now the Power Rankings. We are going to change to a different format this week, showing all teams in the Power Rankings with a recap of the past 10 games for the Top 5 teams.

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Salem Witch Hats (128.0, +) - The Hats swept Fort Hagen, won two at County Crossing, swept the Silver Shroud again, and then won two over Easy Town in an 8-2 stretch.
2) Vault 81 Dwellers (123.5, +) - The Dwellers went 7-3, sweeping Spectacle Island, winning two over FHE, splitting at Jamaica Plain, and then winning two at the Sox.
3) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (120.5, -) - The Chemists were also 7-3 with a sweep of the Assaultrons and Concord, a split at Nahant, and then a series loss at Starlight.
4) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (115.5, +) - The Boys were 6-4 thanks to a split with Lexington, a series loss at Easy Town, a sweep of the Radstags, and then a series win over County Crossing.
5) Oberland T-51s (114.5, -) - The T-51s continued a steady climb upward by going 7-3 with a sweep of the Rockets, a series win over the Rad Sox, getting swept at Spectacle Island, and then a sweep of the Yao Guai.
6) University Point Deathclaws (110.0, ++)
7) Bunker Hill 75ers (108.0, ++)
8) Spectacle Island Reapers (106.5, --)
9) Starlight Killers (105.5, -)
10) Egret Ninjas (101.5, -)
11) The Slog Ghouls (96.0, +)
12) Quincy Gunners (92.0, +)
13) Easy Town Assaultrons (91.5, --)
14) Nahant Celtics (88.5, +)
15) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (87.0, --)
16) Roxbury Rad Sox (85.0, +)
17) County Crossing Bloodbugs (79.5, -)
18) Goodneighbor Hancocks (78.0, +)
19) Lexington Synths (68.0, -)
20) Atom Cats (62.5, o)
21) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (58.0, +)
22) Diamond City Swatters (57.0, -)
23) FHE Yao Guai (52.5, -)
24) Concord Radstags (31.0, o)

Brotherhood League

Although there is some distance now with the Witch Hats possessing a 15-game lead over last place County Crossing, this league still feels like the toughest in the CBO. The Hats cannot sleep with Nordhagen Beach and Easy Town still in contention. The Slog and Nahant may not be ready yet, but they have accumulated a lot of talent.

Salem is still intriguing with the CBO's best record since statistics would not show that success. The Hats are 2nd in runs scored (385) in the NCA, despite their highest offensive statistic being 2nd in OPS (.825). They are also 5th in runs allowed (320) with the 4th-best Starters ERA (4.14) and the 6th-best Bullpen ERA (4.49). The lineup is top-heavy with their first four batters: 2B Michael Hoopring (.290/21/48), RF Brian DeLong (.262/12/39), LF Dan Erb (.373/19/48), and 1B Needham Tickler (.265/18/52). For pitching, the starters have all done OK and look to have four starters who will finish the season with 10 or more wins: Jaa Thirtysix (7-3, 4.05), Chase Wede (9-7, 3.70), Bry McBourbon (10-6, 3.70), and Aimer Doghair (10-3, 5.06). CL Justin Wilkerson (25 SV, 2.66) has been excellent out of the bullpen and leads the CBO in saves and shutdowns (25).

Institute League

Sunshine Tidings has control of the IL with the CBO's biggest lead of five games. Like it has been all season, the league is top-heavy with only the Chemists, Bunker Hill, and Starlight truly in playoff contention.

Bunker Hill is one of the teams that can benefit greatly by trading for some offensive firepower down the stretch. The 75ers are 8th in run scored (333) while 3rd in runs allowed (301), showing that a lack of offense is what is keeping them most down. The middle of the lineup--CF Jig McGhee (.301/11/31), 1B Matt Stickhouse (.328/19/54), and SS Aaron Squire (.348/15/44)--have been very productive, but they need to distribute run production throughout. Look for potential moves at catcher and the corner outfield to increase that productivity.

Minutemen League

What looked as though it could be a runaway win has now tightened with the Reapers struggling. However, really University Point is the only team that benefited from those struggles since both Jamaica Plain and Quincy had losing records the past two weeks.

Spectacle Island seems to have overcome their talent gaps to be the strongest all-around team in the ML. The Reapers are 3rd in runs scored (407) and 5th in runs allowed (334), which means pitching will need to be better, especially the starters with the 7th-best ERA (4.78) in the SCA. The top two starters--Chris Teddybear (10-4, 3.03) and Justin Sumbich (8-4, 4.47)--have been effective, and their two-closer combination of Alien Mars (10 SV, 3.14) and Ghost Kyudalson (12 SV, 2.12) has worked out well. The lineup is full of power hitters, with the 2nd-best mark of 130 team home runs, led by 1B Homestay Lovetap (.315/33/66).

Railroad League

Vault 81 is doing what Roxbury usually does, taking series when other teams think they have a shot. Both Oberland and Egret have played effectively through the season's first 72 games, too, meaning that the Rad Sox are looking way up at those squads. Not only that, but the Sox seem to be in sell mode, already making a surprise trade when they sent LF Young Goodman (.296/13/41) to Nordhagen Beach for prospects.

For the Dwellers, they will need to find improvement in pitching to maintain the SCA's best record. While they are 2nd in runs scored (414), Vault 81 is 9th in runs allowed (360). They have two really good pitchers in Scruffy Taguchi (8-6, 4.42) and Exxie Summerset (11-4, 3.07), but they need more production throughout their rotation. CL Chris Salazar (20 SV, 2.95) has been an exceptionally excellent pitcher.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

July 6 - Lernz Tentsleep is respected by most Sunshine Tidings Chemists fans for his no-frills style of play. The 30-year-old shortstop went about his business with vigor last week to grab the North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .474 average (9-for-19) with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

So far this season Tentsleep has 29 home runs and a .316 batting average.

Harry Byrd must have thought he was dreaming. First he went on an exceptional week-long batting spree, bashing the ball at a .579 clip, then the Vault 81 second baseman finds out he has been chosen the league's best performer and gets the SCA Player of the Week Award.

He told BNN reporters in the postgame, "It was a great week for me. I could see the ball so well. Plus some of the balls seemed to have good eyes, too."

For the week Byrd batted .579 (11-for-19) with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.

This season Byrd is batting .340 with 18 home runs.

July 13 - Booth Larson of the Salem Witch Hats had a super week and today was voted the Player of the Week by the North Charles Association.

The 26-year-old third baseman put up a .524 average with a .565 on-base percentage, racking up 11 hits in 21 at-bats, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Posting a .311 batting average to date, Larson has 7 home runs and 23 RBIs.

At the age of 29, Chris Hirshfield might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The University Point left fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .450 batting average. For his efforts Hirshfield collected the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 9 hits in 20 at-bats, 3 home runs and 5 RBIs last week in 5 games.

This year Hirshfield is batting .325 with 26 home runs and 65 RBIs.

MML All-Star Game

Joel Mutfruit said the annual all-star game is mostly for the fans to enjoy, but the players have a lot of fun too.

"It's a great time to get that much talent on one ball diamond," he said. "You feel fortunate to even be part of it."

Mutfruit wasn't just a part of the game, he was named the game MVP, as his Legends League All-Stars won 7-4 over the Stars League All-Stars.

Mutfruit went 3 for 4 in the game to earn the nod as the game's best.

Mutfruit is hitting .292 lifetime with 186 hits, 31 doubles, 4 triples, 41 home runs, and 120 RBIs to date. He has scored 104 runs and stolen 2 bases.

The Legends League All-Stars versus the Stars League All-Stars. It happens every year halfway through the season. It's a baseball spectacle for the fans and the players alike. It's the 2308 Massachusetts Minor League All-Star Game. The fans get to see all their favorite stars perform in the same game, and the outstanding players get to play against each other. The players are out to prove that their league is the best. Players are chosen by a vote of the fans.

BMU All-Star Game

The best players the BMU has to offer took to Marlborough Free Park tonight for an all-star showcase.

When the dust settled, the Commonwealth Association bested the Massachusetts Association by a score of 9-5.

Helping the Commonwealth Association to victory was Bryce Shea, who said it's a memory he'll cherish.

"You can tell your kids and your grandkids some day that you were the MVP of the all-star game, that's a cool moment," he said.

Nothing is for certain about the 2308 Boston Minor Union All-Star Game. It might be dominated by top-notch pitching performances. Or it could turn into a home run derby. Who knows? Pitch by pitch, inning by inning, the game could feature a little of both -- six strikeouts in a row by a nasty southpaw -- or a 3-homer day for some superstar slugger -- plus great catches, thrills, chills and spills -- all the great and the unexpected things that can happen in a baseball game.

This year, the Commonwealth Association will be represented by these All-Star performers:

SP Jumping Jehoshaphat Cobb (MYST) - 4-1, 2.38 ERA, 45.1 IP, 0.95 WHIP, 6.8 K/9, 1.4 WAR
SP Dave Curedfast (TAFF) - 7-3, 4.40 ERA, 75.2 IP, 1.55 WHIP, 6.2 K/9, 2.1 WAR
SP Luzzer Eyelash (BROK) - 1-1, 3.46 ERA, 52.0 IP, 1.42 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, 0.7 WAR
SP Darius Livers (SANC) - 4-5, 4.44 ERA, 77.0 IP, 1.51 WHIP, 6.3 K/9, 1.4 WAR
SP Boxer Rigger (TAFF) - 5-5, 3.71 ERA, 77.2 IP, 1.29 WHIP, 6.0 K/9, 2.8 WAR
SP Clubhouse Treelover (MARB) - 7-4, 4.32 ERA, 75.0 IP, 1.47 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, 1.9 WAR

The North League earned bragging rights with a 7-4 win over the South League.

Lakehouse Calculator was named the MVP for his efforts, as he batted 1-for-2 in the contest.

"I'm just glad we won, that's the main thing," he said. "The personal accomplishment isn't something I strive for in an all-star game."
